Responsible tourism: Southern Greece and the Peloponnese hiking holiday

Environment

Our company promotes ecotourism and sustainable adventure holidays, whilst providing you a unique travel experience. We take you to an "off the beaten track" holiday, in southern Greece! When choosing this tour, you are choosing a responsible holiday as we are a company committed to what is called Responsible Travel. We fully respect local people and the environment and we treat our guests as travelers and not as tourists.

The nature of this trip itself is environmentally friendly, as it is a walking tour in a small group. During this trip our guests will have the opportunity to ascent the highest mountains of southern Central Greece and the north of the Peloponnese and to visit the cultural highlights of the South.
This is an eco-guided tour. Our guides will share their knowledge and experience with our guests in order for them to really understand the importance of the ecosystems are travelling into.

This tour is for small groups, up to 8 persons and it is performed with a minivan, facts which lead to limited impact to the local ecosystem in comparison to a bus.

No single-use recipients are used in our picnics; fabric picnic tablecloth instead of a paper or a plastic one, and washable recipients. Our guests must have their own picnic set. We encourage our guests to help us clean at least the spot we choose every time for our picnic. We collect any possible garbage and carried them to the nearest operating bucket.

We avoid the use of plastic water bottles. In most areas the water is drinkable and our guests can fill their bottles with tap water.

Community

We work with local people. We avoid large hotel complexes and “all inclusives”; instead we select small scale locally-owned, family-run accommodations and taverns, and we shop for our picnics from small local stores.

For the meals we choose local specialties and traditional products so that the travelers can get familiar with local cuisine, whilst we benefit the local economy. We suggest our guests to buy local products and gifts.

Furthermore, for our visits into the major archaeological sites and museums, such as Delphi, Ancient Olympia, Mycenae and Epidaurus, we hire local licensed cultural guides.

We ask our guests to respect the culture and customs of each destination and do everything possible not to disturb the local activities. However, as this is a trip for really small groups the negative impact is practically zero.

Our guides and local partners with their expertise and knowledge on the area they will make this trip and unforgettable experience for you!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

It's hard to pick just one thing. The rides were great, the selection of archaeological sights was exceptionally well done! My favorite bike ride was going down the mountain from Delphi, my boyfriend's was a couple of days later. Our guides were knowledgeable and fun and always made sure we had fun and customized the trip to suit our interests, frequently without us even having to ask. ("We noticed you liked swimming, so we tried to find beaches near our
other rides.")

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be vocal about your likes and dislikes, they are happy to accommodate around them. But also: probably do some hill biking before this trip. Greek's "mostly flat" is different from my midwestern US background "mostly flat." Also, bike gloves made the descents a lot easier with the flat bars, both for padding and to absorb some of the hand sweat.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

All of the hotels, restaurants, and businesses seemed to be locally owned, including the tour company. The guides at the archaeological sites were local, and our tour guides were from the Athens area. I'm not sure about reducing environmental impact, given that we were driven around for the trip.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

We had an amazing time - top notch! Elpida planned a great trip for us and Dmitris and Costas (names potentially spelled wrong, sorry guys) were amazing to spend a week with. I HIGHLY recommend this tour.
