Baltic Flyway bird watching holiday in Lithuania
Description of Baltic Flyway bird watching holiday in Lithuania
Every October, millions of birds leave their breeding grounds in Scandinavia and northern Russia, headed for some winter sun in Western Europe and Africa. Along the way, they pass through the Baltic states and, because Lithuania is the narrowest point of this ‘Baltic Flyway’, it is a natural bottleneck where birdwatchers will be in their element.
During this eight-day tour, you can expect to see many thousands of passing birds, including Black-throated and Red-throated Divers, Bewick’s swans, Capercaillie, White-tailed eagle, Merlin, Greater Scaup and countless others.
You’ll arrive into Vente Cape in the Nemunas Delta, with its old but still-functioning ringing station. At the peak of the migration, up to 800,000 birds fly overhead every day. From here you’ll head to the Curonian Spit National Park, its sandy dunes separating the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. This is an excellent location from which to see raptors and passerines. It’s not unknown for over 1.5 million birds to pass in a single day here.
After a few days on the Curonian Spit, hopefully very successful, you’ll move on to the beautiful Dzukija National Park. This wooded landscape is dotted with picturesque ancient villages such as Marcinkonys that showcase the region’s rich cultural heritage. It’s a wonderful place to catch your breath for a while and compare notes, before departure.
PlanetLithuania is proud of its water that is actually really tasty. We drink our tap water everyday and we always recommend it to our travelers. That’s why we recommend to use reusable water bottles instead of buying water in plastic bottles.
Bird watching tours give a rare opportunity to take a look into the pure nature’s life. Our main goal is to respect natural environment and leave everything exactly as we found it. Since the diversity of birds is really rich, we do our best to join the nature conservation programs that ensures effective protection. We work with a local guide who knows the best place to view a variety of different birds without disturbing them.
We work with small groups for several reasons. This is the best way to ensure a maximum interaction between guide and a tourist. We strongly believe, that the success of every tour is caused by close and personal relation between guide and a tourist. Also, this way we can be sure to minimize the negative impact on environment.
PeopleWe are work with the local guides, as we strongly believe that locals are the most appropriate choice. The main guide for this tour – is a local professional guide Marius Karlonas. He is a member of Lithuanian Ornithological Society. Because of his knowledge, Marius is also one of the best knowing bird watching guide in all country. Lithuanian Ornithological Society combines enthusiasm, experience and knowledge as well as everyone’s willingness to save birds’ and all nature’s conservation.
Since the tours are provided in very specific locations, we choose a possibility to collaborate with locals and offer our tourists to stay at homesteads instead of big hotels. This way our guests can avoid rush and feel the real nature’s life. The unique experience begins every morning with the wake up. Even more, this is great opportunity to meet locals and get to know them (their everyday life, crafts and traditions).
