Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Women's empowerment in Sri Lanka volunteering

On arrival all participants are given appropriate training to ensure that they are aware of the immediate environment around them and do not negatively impact it.

Our volunteer placements in Sri Lanka are designed to immerse you in a different culture, living and working with local people. There’s plenty to gain personally from this. But we make sure that local environment benefit too by getting volunteers involved in activities like a beach clean up in Galle every week.

Our volunteer house is also equipped with recycling facilities to seperate out plastic, paper and glass. Our local partners are leaders in sustainable tourism. All activities and itineraries are designed in collaboration to ensure that environment and animals are cared for in the right way. We also educate our community about environmental awareness and recycling by conducting workshops every week.

One of the aims of the womens education program is to make them aware of how they can improve their surrounding and also conducting appropriate sessions on hygiene, recycling and other topics related to the environment. Besides the women's education program we run several environment and animal care projects where participants can contribute to.

All our volunteer programs are designed in collaboration with the community and based around the principles of community-based tourism. We are committed to providing local people with support while still continuing their traditional way of life. All our volunteers are housed in local areas that support the local community. We employ our support staff such as drivers, chefs and cleaners from the local area we live that can generate income for them. Our volunteers also use transport such as tuktuks that are local to us and this generates income for them in turn supporting the local community around us.

Volunteer time, effort, and attention are of great value to our local partners such as NGOs, schools, and community center that we serve. We make sure that all our project partners whoever we are tied up with are operating with our values in mind and are for the improvement of life on ground. In Galle where we are based we also operate our own community center that caters to children and womens education specifically.

Cultural sensitivity:
We emphasise the importance of showing respect for local people and their customs in our briefing material. Participants will work alongside our local staff, forming close bonds and getting an insight into real life in Sri Lanka. Our policy is to send people to the developing world in small groups or individually. This minimises the social impact that the participants have on the destination and helps them to integrate into the local community.
