Responsible tourism: 16 day India tour

We are environmentally conscious and try to leave no traces to the travel destination. We put effort into educating our travellers to be aware of their impact on the ecosystems and to act responsibly.

Most of hotels that we use for this tour in India are owned by locals. Hotel Poetree Sarovar Portico in Thekkady that our guests will stay for 2 nights is built on principles of sustainability, eco-friendliness and being one with nature. Poetree was built with strong principles of nature conservation and sustainability, a sense of spirit that we refer to as ‘The earth and soul’. The resort structure and foundation is built from rock and rubble from the barren land that this once was. The exterior walls, plastered with sand and mud, own to Thekkady. The thatched roofs, built from local elephant grass, with the hands of the unique Mannan tribe from hardly kilometres away. Not more than 32 trees were felled during construction but yet, made up of 435 fruit trees planted back to the earth. The location gives us advantages of minimal air-conditioning and glazed walls that let in maximum light, thus with a low reliance on electrical power. Hotel Crowne Plaza in Kochi uses IHG Green Engage system, an innovative online environmental sustainability system that gives hotels the means to measure and manage their impact on the environment.

Before travelling to India, we give our customers a short briefing about the importance of being responsible. We advise our travellers to take care of nature, control water usage whenever they can, and pick up all the litter that they see.

Our correspondence and promotion are carried out via the Internet and email, minimizing the amount of paper we use.

Excursions and attractions in which captive wildlife is held are not offered. Any disturbance of natural ecosystem is minimised.

Our tours are designed to show and preserve local culture and traditions. During our tour, we will visit Kathakali dance studio for a traditional dance performance and have opportunity to see and participate in face makeup and dancing. We also include visits to Kumili spice market of Thekkady and advise our customers to buy spices from locals in the aim to support local economy.

All of the guides, drivers and staff are local people. We also use local transport wherever possible, from trains to taxis and cycle rickshaws. In the aim to support the local economy we only eat in local restaurants and buy in local markets.

Respect to the local people, their cultures, the economy and the environment should be the first rule that travellers follow. On trips like this one where dress standards can be conservative (particularly outside of the major cities), we recommend our travellers wear loose, lightweight clothing so not to offend, particularly when visiting religious sites.

Our goal is not only to help the local community but also to educate our customers to act in a socially responsible way. We will attempt to give an insight and understanding of the host culture and community to our clients so that they can gain more from their visit. Sustainable development, protection and conservation are most important goals of our company.
