Responsible tourism: Self-guided coastal trails of Portugal holiday

Environment

We use a mixture of public and private transport on this tour to support the local infrastructure and reduce environmental impact, but of course the cleanest way to get around is also the most enjoyable – walking! We and our local suppliers adhere to our strict Responsible Tourism Policy in terms of managing walks and the disposal of waste.

The Rota Vicentina is long distance trail created by the Rota Vicentina Association as part of a project that aims to preserve one of the last wildernesses of the southern coast of Europe while promoting sustainable touristic projects. This non-profit organization has successfully involved the local communities in the maintenance and management of the trail and the promotion of related tourist product.

Tour operators from all over the world have committed themselves to respect the basic principles of sustainable tourism along this trail by applying for partnership of the Rota Vicentina Association. Our local agent is an official partner and pays for membership.

Community

Core to our philosophy is that we should be an economic benefit to the countries and communities we are visiting. We do this in Portugal by using locally owned hotels, spreading our custom to a variety of local restaurants (which is a great way to sample delicious local food!). By using many local taxis too, we’re really supporting a lot of small businesses.

Most of the accommodations we use along the Rota Vicentina are partners of the Rota Vicentina Association. Several of these accommodations also participate actively by Volunteering (monitoring of trail quality, repainting route markers and place marking poles, rubbish collection etc.). The local community is also involved and held responsible for environmental issues like cutting and clearing of acacia (invader), rubbish collection on the trails, beach cleaning, and so on.

In addition to the above, we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key and so all staff, Tour leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage. As well as this, we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of UK travel industry bodies Tourism Concern and AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators. We acknowledge that air travel has a negative impact on our environment, so we work together with Cool Earth to offset carbon and protect our important rainforests.
