Responsible tourism: Uganda fishing trip

Environment

Our trip does focus on fishing. To ensure this is done in a way to protect the environment and the number of fish in the river we follow strict guidelines. We operate a strict catch and release policy. We encourage our clients to avoid cut-offs where at all possible and retrieve lost tackle, reminding them to consider the potential danger to river-dwellers, birds and mammals if they do not. Our clients are issued with guidelines before departing for their trip and on the ground it is ensured these are adhered to.

We must make mention of the Zwia Rhino Sanctuary which we can visit near Kampala. Rhino Fund Uganda was formed as an NGO in 1997 tasked with overseeing its aim of reintroducing Rhino back into the National Parks of Uganda. Zwia Rhino Sanctuary is home to 22 white Rhino. These all from an original 6 . Not only do the Sanctuary provide just that to Rhino they also rehabilitate other animals and release back into the wild.

Waste and waste management can be particularly hard where tourists arrive and there is not the infra structure to cope with the waste they generate. A curse of the modern traveler is plastic water bottles we advise our travelers to consider alternatives such as the steripen to disinfect water and of course boil and put your own water bottle. We are in communication with our suppliers about the best way of providing clean drinking water to our clients on their trip whilst considering the environmental impact. Kenya has banned the plastic bag , Uganda has yet to follow however again we advise our clients to use reusable bags.

Community

Murchison Falls, where you will be fishing, is within the National Park and just by fishing here, using a river guide and a local boat you are introducing hard currency directly into the local, grassroots community. So a big thank you for that! The money paid to visit these areas directly goes on conserving the wildlife and provides an alternative source of income to the local people to poaching. Operating in the parks also provides an avenue of employment that allows local people to remain in their home area rather than migrate to urban areas which the lure generally exceeds the reality.

Our local supplier employs local people on the ground both as guides and in the office. Training and a fair wage are given. The feedback we have received from previous travellers who talk to the guides are very positive about their employment. The Guides receive quality training in wildlife spotting, tourism, general knowledge about their country, safe driving and people management.

Our supplier works with Akatagyenda Community Based Tourism.
Communities near 'protected areas' and national parks have an opportunity to increase household income through tourism.. Uganda, as a tourism destination, had become more suited to the smaller scale, environmentally related tourism called Eco-tourism. The hope of Akatagyenda is the formation of a symbiotic relationship between tourism, indigenous people and natural, environmentally sensitive areas. Akatagyenda believes, tourism is among the best sectors to help communities get out of poverty. It empower local communities in sustainable development that can plan, manage and develop themselves.
