Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: India cycling holiday and tiger safari

Environment

The challenge is designed to not only be a fundraiser for the Nature Stewardship Alliance UK registered charity, and TOFTigers India an Indian based conservation and sustainable tourism NGO that have been working together in these areas for over 15 years.

We use an Internationally reputed ground operator and luxury accommodation providers that are both TOFTigers members and make a committment to sustainable and responsible tourism but are also TOFTigers own PUG Eco certified lodges of the highest eco-standards as well as comfort standards.

TOFTigers has trained many of the nature guides in both park in association with IIFM and the prak authorities over the years as well as advocated and guided many (not all!) of the policies now implemented to ensure these parks long term survival.

The trip leader, Julian Matthews, founder of the charity was also instrumental in designing the basis of a proposed and pioneering community based conservancy with some of the landscape that you will ride through, that now has been included in the Pench Tiger reserve.

Community

All of TOFTigers PUG certified lodges are carefully measured for, their impact on the neighbouring communities, assessed by TOFTigers own independent auditor teams.

The two lodges used on this trip, Treehouse lodge in Pench and Kanha Earth Lodge have been assessed as very positive and exemplary in their ratings, (measured as Quality and Outstanding ratings respectively) and with regards to their neighbouring communities, ensuring local job recruitment, proper hospitality and skills training is given, local enterprises benefit in transportation, building and maintenance and good community relations and support structures with its neighbours are part of its every day to day operations. Besides this issues, other elements are also assessed like waste production, water use and energy use and these are all minimised with recycling used wherever possible.

The camping along the bike route is done with the permission of the local villages in areas close to the corridor forest and an agreed camping fee is given in lieu of our stay. This helps these village communities to understand the relationship between wildlife and nature tourism, and how they benefit by maintaining a healthy ecosystem in their area.
