Description of Antarctica cruise from Australia

This Antarctica cruise from Australia is an exclusive opportunity to embark on a journey in collaboration with Mawsons Huts Foundation, which was set up to conserve the historic huts of Sir Douglas Mawson, Australia’s great polar explorer whose base was at Cape Denison on Commonwealth Bay.

This is a 28 day odyssey through Commonwealth Bay visiting World Heritage Sites such as Macquarie Island, Campbell Island, the Auckland Islands, the East Antarctic coast, The Snares and then finishing in Bluff, on the southern coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Landing at Mawson’s Huts at Cape Denison will depend on weather conditions, but of course we will endeavour to get on land at this point.

This trip of a lifetime into exquisite Subantarctic and Antarctic seascapes is on board the Akademik Shokalskiy, a small polar expedition ship accommodating just 48 passengers. There are twin or triple share cabins, approximately half of which have private facilities. All cabins have outside windows or portholes and there is plenty of deck space for observing the incredible wildlife such as penguins, whales, sea lions and dolphins on this trip.

Hello. If you'd like to chat about this holiday or need help finding one we're very happy to help. Rosy & team.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Antarctica cruise from Australia

In our alignment with IAATO we follow strict rules and guidelines to ensure the environment is responsibly protected and maintained to ensure we can continue to share the beauties and wonders of this land for years to come. We also comply with MARPOL to prevent and reduce pollution from ships. In compliance, all waste is disposed of responsibly on land to minimise negative impacts. Furthermore, the smaller cruise ship facilitates a smaller group of people, minimising impact and maximimising the experience. The ship this voyage takes place on, the Akademik Shokalskiy, has been a key contributor to the development of environmental guidelines for ships travelling to the Antarctic.

Before the adventure begins we send out information electronically on the Antarctic environment highlighting what to bring, advice and how to contribute positively through sustainable initiatives of waste management. We also educate persons on how to correctly engage with the surroundings - for example we do not encourage the buying of endangered specifies meats or products and anything unruly taken from the environment e.g. shells.

These guidelines are aligned with The Antarctic Treaty Meeting Kyoto, 1994. We take our environmental responsibility serious and like to remind the people taking part in our expeditions that they should too, this is further exhibited by our educated expedition leader and team who offer further advice through on-board lectures dedicated to the history and environment and the correct way in which to view wildlife in order to help maintain a highly comfortable and undisturbed habitat for the wildlife's comfort.

We also strive to make independent sustainability initiatives a part of day to day work. Our offices are striving towards a paperless work space, developing and sending all information and work online and minimising our use of print, printing to specific orders. We encourage our staff to reduce their contribution to pollution via CO2 gas with our bike payment programs for staff and where possible, our offices use 100% green energy.

Aligning ourselves with The Mawson's Huts Foundation, established in 1997 the foundation is aimed at the conservation of Mawsons Huts at Cape Denison, which has funded and organized 10 expeditions to the site. We also encourage persons to buy appropriate souvenirs from the starting location of Hobart as we spend the first night at the destination. As well as this we stay in a National Trust listed venue, i Hobart before the ship departs. We encourage persons to engage with the history and enjoy the heritage style accommodation.

We currently work with 3 different charities, giving us a broad spectrum and diversifying where our money goes. We work with Project Peru in the UK who run an orphanage in Zapallal in the shanty town outskirts of Lima, ANIA in Peru which is a high profile Peruvian NGO working with children and helps to teach them about their local environment and how to manage it affectively.

We also corroborate with foundations in Australia whom work on several development projects in Latin America and around the world. We help these charities by fundraising treks, donations as a company through our clients and through many of our customers who volunteer their time and expertise. These charities are close to our core of supporting the environment and children in need.
