Description of Summer Antarctic cruise

This 11 day summer Antarctic cruise takes you into the heart, coves and inlets of the Antarctic Peninsula during the month of January. Antarctica at this time of year creates ideal conditions for Zodiac operations to get up close and personal to extraordinary landscapes and wildlife, such as whales and penguins.

Starting and ending in Ushuaia, Patagonia, you will be crossing the infamous Drake Passage, but the views and unforgettable Antarctic adventures at the other end make it extremely worthwhile. You travel on board MV Hondius, a vessel exceeding Polar Code sustainability requirements and built as an ice-strengthened vessel as the first polar-class 6 vessel. It accommodates 174 passengers in 82 cabins, all ensuite, with a variety of styles: singles, doubles, portholes and windows and suites. Do talk to us about the various options on offer and pricings.

There are no upgrades on the wildlife and landscape viewing however, as everyone gets to see the same White Continent wonders, including migrating pods of whales, penguin chicks and wonderful birdlife. As well as lectures and workshops with expert guides and guests on board in the evenings, you will have a chance to take zodiac adventures to get up close and personal with the glaciers, icebergs and dramatic environment of Antarctica. You may even have a chance to camp or kayak, conditions permitting. Every day brings new adventures in Antarctica, so be prepared for a very exciting journey.

Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

We are excited to use the newest ship, the MV Hondius, on this voyage. This ship is not only the highest polar class ice-strengthened vessel, but also environmentally viable. On top of following strict codes of conduct outlined by SOLAS and MARPOL Convention, the vessel is specifically aligned with the Polar Code of which is adopted by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). This ensures the appropriate actions are taken in regards to oil, garbage and waste to protect the pristine polar environment. Waste management regarding human waste is disposed of on land and not in waters or near icecaps. The ship uses biodegradable or water based lubricants and follows strict protocol on food and cleaning waste. In cohering with sustainability initiatives, as members of IAATO, we follow strict codes of conduct to adhere to minimising negative environmental impacts and stepping towards an Antarctica here to stay.

We are aiming towards low impact, environmentally sustainable initiatives in and around the office. We are striving towards as a paperless office sending majority of in and out of office documents via computer, printing only to order. We encourage our staff to reduce their contribution to pollution of CO2 gas with our bike payment programs and try to grow public transportation to and from the office. Where possible our offices use 100% green energy and is continually looking for more opportunities to use this energy and reduce our carbon footprint.

In preparation of trips, we send electronic documents highlighting sustainable initiatives involving waste management and how to correctly engage with the surrounding environment. We care about being environmentally friendly and like our clients to be well acquainted with the matter. This information is in association with the Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty and overall Antarctic Treaty 1959. Information from our expedition teams and adventure leaders is available and aims to inform individuals about sustainability precautions further and how to correctly view wildlife to maintain their habitat.

The Impacts of this Trip

We encourage our clients to experience the initial location of Ushuaia a day in advance to enjoy one of the most southern locations of Latin America and further encourage people to buy appropriate souvenirs and support the community. We discourage the buying of animal products such as endangered species meat or products, or items taken from the environment, i.e. shells. We also try to create opportunity to see research and historical sites including the former research station/now museum of Port Lockroy and engage with local history.

We currently work with 3 different charities, giving us a broad spectrum and diversifying where our money goes. We work with Project Peru in the UK who run an orphanage in Zapallal in the shanty town outskirts of Lima, ANIA in Peru which is a high profile Peruvian NGO working with children and helps to teach them about their local environment and how to manage it effectively.

We also corroborate with foundations in Australia whom work on several development projects in Latin America and around the world. We help these charities by fundraising treks, donations as a company through our clients and through many of our customers who volunteer their time and expertise. These charities are close to our core of supporting the environment and children in need.
