Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

All of the resorts are family operated using traditional style building methods which have minimal impact on the local environment. Komodo Resort rooms are made in teak wood that either has been recycled or comes from a controlled plantation. Recycled water is used for the watering of plants, grass and flowers and drinking water is provided free in all rooms and served in stainless steel bottles. Much of the water used at the resort is stored rain water.

The resort is built on the beach, leaving the natural shrubbery that covers the remainder of the island in tact, untouched. This allows the deer and birds that have always lived there to remain undisturbed.

The house reef, which is lush and lively, is only permitted for snorkelling, to prevent any potential damage from close contact. Guests may enter off the pier to prevent standing on and damaging corals.

Part of your holiday cost is paid to marine park to help protect the ocean life and police to prevent overfishing in the area. We also visit Rinca Island where there is one of the last 3 natural populations of Komodo Dragons, supporting the conservation trust by paying fees.

The Impacts of this Trip

We are using a number of local partners which not only helps us to create a special kind of experience but also benefits local communities directly. During our time on Flores we'll be eating at different local restaurants and family homes so that the local communities share in the profits of tourism.

Local dive and tour guides are used throughout the tour and the resorts we use encourage employment and they train people from the surrounding communities. Transfers and connections are managed by small local operators ensuring an even distribution of funds, directly benefits local communities.

Particular emphasis is placed upon employing local diving staff from the fishing industry. We also encourage tour members to 'buy responsibly' at local markets and Warungs (family owned shops). Traveling in small groups enables us to limit our impact in more remote and culturally sensitive regions throughout the tour, particularly in Komodo regions where lifestyle tends to be more primitive.
