Sulawesi and Borneo snorkel safari

Carbon reduction

Your holiday will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this holiday and how to reduce them.

Environment

As part of our efforts to preserve the marine environment we will only work with local suppliers who adopt the same conservation practises that we believe in. The Siladen Resort has installed buoys which allows boats to anchor without damaging the coral reef. Local staff and guests are asked to sign the NSWA code of practise which forbids boating malpractice to protect the surrounding reef. The resort also supports and contributes with the creation of artificial reefs in the Bunaken National Marine Park.

The use of plastic containers is limited only to bottled water. The resort is currently installing reusable 19l bottle of drinking water in the guest rooms and in common areas.

Part of your holiday cost is paid as a conservation and marine park fees which contributes to the protection of local wildlife, we'll also provide in depth briefings and enforce principles on how to view wildlife above and below the surface in order that we can reduce the impact of our visit as much as possible.

In terms of consumption we aim to limit the amount of plastic and waste products used whilst on tour - refilling bottled water is highly encouraged, we make a local donation of 15 per original bottle returned at the end of each tour (i.e tour members have only used one bottle for the entire trip). We also encourage tour members to limit their usage of shampoos, laundry and cosmetic/cleaning products during the tour.

Our visit to Samboja Lodge supports the Borneo Orangutan Survival Trust, rehabilitating and reintroducing orangutans and sun bears into the wild, as well as preserving and expanding forest and habitat for the animals.

Community

All of our local partners have established mutually strong relationships with the local communities, complying with all local rules and regulations such as a minimum wage requirement and fair trade rules.

Our chosen resorts are actively supporting the local communities that we operate in. Siladen resort pay the villagers to participate in beach cleans and also help by sending non-organic waste to Manado city where it can be disposed of properly. The resort also regularly present about marine debris to educate local children.

The Samboja Lodge takes great pride in its social initiatives that have been running for many years now. The property employs almost all local staff and actively improve the health, education and skill development of the people of the area. Many people now speak English, are being trained in conservation initiatives, and can be employed close to their family homes in this industry. they also have new found pride in their region.

The community development and education programs run from donations are explained to the guests on arrival with the option to donate further.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Sulawesi provided some spectacular snorkeling, and the resort was a wonderful place to stay on all aspects.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

There is no need to take a water bottle, as we were provided with several eco-friendly ones. Just take some suitable clothing to snorkel in as, as we had 3, hour-long sessions each day, the sun is very strong and it would be easy to get burnt.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

All the resorts provided considerable employment in the local area, giving the locals a vested interest in looking after their environment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

Brilliant

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Snorkeling the Komodo national park area and doinh house reef snorkels right in front of our resort. Beautiful healthy reef.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

If you want to snorkel consider the komodo alore trip. We spent 2 to three days looking at Balinese culture and villages. A lot of time just getting to placesin the interior. Height of steps at lodges and some sites like temples may be a challenge for people with knee problems. No handrails. We had two people on our trip with poor fitness or poor mobility. While I think they had a good time there were some challenges.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Not sure. The Komodo resort is owned by an italian. For sure we did not reduce environmental impact ...inevitable single use plastic...we were provided metal water bottles at out last site. We did an extension to Java. We went to a local village for a tour and that benefited locals but no available filtered water...most places had to use plastic bottles

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

I loved the snorkel tour. We had a little snafu with communication when we arrived and were given wrong instructio s for pick up but everything else went smoothly. Would give 5 exoect for that
