Description of Mexican heartlands small group tour

This two week Mexico holiday takes you into the country’s heartlands, exploring towns and villages off the usual tourist circuit and learning about its fascinating indigenous and colonial history.

Starting and ending in Mexico City, this small group tour has a cultural emphasis, whereby you can learn about Mexico’s multi cultural influences, ancient sites such as Teotihuacan and colonial towns such as San Miguel de Allende or Guanajuato.

We also spend a few days in Mexico City using it as a base to explore the ancient sites on the outskirts but also to wander around the historic centre known as Templo Mayor where art, music and traditional culture are omnipresent.

Carbon reduction

Your holiday will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this holiday and how to reduce them.

We educate our passengers on environmental issues on all of our trips. We have a group meeting at the start, during which we encourage everyone to refill bottles and recycle where possible. All our tour leaders are there to set an example for how to be a more responsible traveller.

We work with many of the accommodation providers on this trip to help them minimise the over washing of linens and towels. Many hotels will display signs asking you to reuse towels and take shorter showers to cut down water wastage.

We use local transport where it’s safe, reliable and feasible to do so. When it’s not feasible we’ll use private, locally-owned transportation. Mexico has a very comfortable public bus network allowing us to avoid the unnecessary use of private transport, reducing our carbon emissions as well as giving our passengers the opportunity to interact with locals.

We encourage our suppliers to adopt more sustainable practices and often select suppliers who already have green practices in place. We eat at local Mexican markets and restaurants to support local businesses and the sourcing of local food products.

During this trip we will learn about the local culture and history through visiting archaeological sites, museums and churches. The culture in Morelia and Guanajuato is alive in the incredible architecture here – making them both magical destinations to visit.

An important part of travel is mingling with the locals and experiencing “real life” in your chosen destination. On this trip, we visit small cafes and restaurants and buy locally produced crafts and fresh produce. This gives locals the opportunity to earn money directly and our travellers the chance to interact with them. We also encourage travellers to learn as many Spanish words as possible, as it’s a perfect way to show respect and immerse yourself in the Mexican culture.

We employ local leaders. We also design and operate our trips to feature local suppliers or suppliers who directly benefit the local community and economy. We offer local people good working conditions, a fair wage, and empower them with training opportunities. All of our tour leaders go through an initial training program, which includes a module on responsible travel.
