Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: South Africa cultural and wildlife safari

Environment

On this safari we spend our time in the pristine Kgalagadi National Park an unfenced wilderness area shared between Botswana and South Africa of over 3,6 million hectares.

The accommodation infrastructure inside the park has been carefully designed using local materials to have minimal impact on the desert surrounds; for example in the tented camp, eco friendly solar powered lights have been installed and water tanks for water storage. We especially encourage our guests to be mindful of water usage in this semi desert where every drop of water is precious and we bring as much of our own drinking as possible from Upington to minimise the purchase and wastage of small bottles inside the park.

We take a maximum number of 6 participants per safari, to minimise our impact on the environment as much as possible and cultivate a lasting appreciation of this rare wilderness with a wish to preserve it for future generations. Our guides advise guests to be respectful of the animals and plants by not feeding any smaller animals or birds in the camps and observing and photographing but not disturbing when on game drives and walks.

Our stay inside the park allows for its continued protection and the entrance fee includes a community levy which is given to the local Bushman and Mier communities living on its borders.

Community

Xaus Lodge is a 100% community owned lodge which means that all proceeds from our stay there go directly to the local Bushman and Mier communities.

We support their crafting project by visiting the Craft Village located near the lodge where you can join in traditional games with the children and learn about their culture and craft making. We encourage the purchasing of their handmade items for sale at the lodge and on the roadside as we drive into the Kalahari from Upington.

The lodge is a fair trade member and winner of the Responsible Travel awards in 2016 for poverty reduction. Most items in the chalets and main lounge/ dining room have been hand crafted by the local communities including a beautiful wall-hanging made by the ladies of Vezokhule, a sewing co-operative in Upington, the dining furniture which is hand-made in Upington and artworks of images burnt by Bushmen artists.
