Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Dive master course in Bali

We are a non-government, not for profit organization dedicated to marine conservation issues in the area and data collection. We strive to produce high quality abundance data sets that can be used by our partners locally and internationally so we can have a better understanding of the current conservation status of the marine mega fauna in the coral triangle.

Indonesia has been ranked as the number one shark and ray catching nation for the last several decades. As an archipelago nation consisting over 17,000 islands and a history of limitless fishing industry, new actions are being taken to help preserve Indonesia’s most prized possession, the underwater world.

We use a combination of long-term research projects to help positively effect legislation change combined with direct intervention methods. This includes weekly beach clean ups with Trash Hero Indonesia, underwater clean ups, and helping to implement new recycling options such as our Eco Ocean Brick project which uses plastic bottles and soft plastics to make build bricks that can be used in the community.

We work closely with our local partners including using their transport services, local land based tour operators, and purchasing all water and food from several local warungs (restaurants). We are committed to reinvesting money back into the communities we come in contact with.

Our foundation board consists of 60% Indonesian citizens and 80% of our employees are local people. We offer good working conditions, benefits, and certification courses to provide them with a valuable and employable skill including diving and research diving.

We run an internships scholarship program available to Indonesian citizens from remote locations who have proved they are interested in pursuing a career in marine conservation. This scholarship is awarded 1 time per year to a certified Indonesian diver who takes part in our regular internship program completing up to Dive Master rating with a team of international researchers while learning to speak and write English.
