Responsible tourism: Cape Town walking holiday

Environment

For each person booking a place on this tour an indigenous young forest sapling (grown endemically in the Platbos Forest Tree Nursery ) is planted in the Trees for Tomorrow Reforestation Project in Platbos, an ancient rare forest in the southern Cape, which we visit on Day 6. You are welcome to plant your individual tree on this day if you wish.

Walking produces a zero carbon footprint and this tour focuses on getting out and about in nature exploring the incredible wealth of plants, animals and birds found surrounding Cape Town in its National Parks on foot. This not only fosters a growing love for the natural world but promotes a wish to protect the environment for future generations. Cape Town as a city is surrounded by the Table Mountain National Park and we also spend a day in the West Coast National Park. Both these parks are incredibly important hotspots for floral biodiversity and birdlife which we help to protect through our visit.

The edible gardens at Babylonstoren which we visit on Day 4 contain over 300 species of edible and medicinal use plants an important example of how nature can support all our needs if we get back to our roots and learn how to holistically plant and nurture the Earth.

We are supporters of the ocean and on our whale watching trip we partner with Southern Right Charters, a boat based whale watching operator whose motto of ‘Observing NOT Disturbing’ prioritises the safety and conservation of the whales and marine life. Their boat has a unique curved design to allow safe close encounters with marine life and on each trip research data is collected towards the Marine Ecology Research Program in Hermanus.

On all our tours we promote usage of a refillable stainless steel water bottle to reduce plastic bottle consumption.

Community

Through our city walk we get to meet and interact with the local community supporting small businesses in neighborhoods where they need it most. We visit a local Spice Market in the Cape Malay Quarter and spend time with a local lady entrepeneur in her home learning how to cook a traditional meal. We also support the Streetwires Beading Project where people living on the street are taught the craft of bead crafting and have an outlet to sell their beautiful African goods.

On our Winelands trip we have selected Villiera Wine Farm for our sparkling wine and nougat tasting stop. Villiera is highly community involved with its own nursery school, health care clinic and environmental club run for all the children and workers on the farm and surrounds. A vegetable and tree project is also part of their community upliftment program.

On our whale watching excursion we use a Fairtrade registered boat company called Southern Right Charters. Respect, Democracy, Fairness, Reliability, Transparency & Sustainability, these are the main principles or Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa.

On our West Coast walk we spend time at the !Khwatuu San Cultural and Training Center where San communities of southern Africa are given the opportunity to learn skills in the tourism and hospitality industry whilst encouraging their cultural traditions. We learn about medicinal plants, the fascinating click language and visit the arts and craft shop and gallery where guests are encouraged to support further by purchasing crafted goods.
