Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Thailand hilltribes, rainforests and beaches tour

Environment

This itinerary takes in both the cities and remote areas Thailand has to offer. In the big cities where pollution is a problem we strive to make as minimal an impact to the environment as possible. We use local transport systems, boats, bikes, tuk-tuks and of course walking to get to those sometimes lesser known destinations. In the rural areas we include kayaking, cycling and trekking.

At the beginning of 2018 we launched our ‘One Bottle At A Time’ initiative to replace disposable plastic water bottles with refillable canisters across our destinations. From March 2018 in Thailand, we will be providing refillable water canisters in our vehicles, meaning our travellers are not generating plastic waste through the daily use of water bottles (which on a full day of touring can be numerable). We also send our guests a wooden toothbrush to help avoid using hotels’ disposable plastic brushes, and educate clients about the limited recycling facilities in Asia, and best-practice regarding waste-reduction. Within our UK offices we operate strict recycling policies and make sure everyone in the office uses reusable crockery and cutlery.

Elephant Hills offers unique elephant experience in which guests get to feed, wash and interact with the animals, making for controlled, intimate and rewarding encounters appreciated both humans and elephants. Award Winning: Elephant Hills regularly picks up awards and nominations for its product. Most recent accolades include the Thailand Green Excellence Award 2015 in the category Animal Welfare and 2016's National Geographic Traveller World Legacy Awards in the category "Conserving the Natural World".

Community

An integral part of a community-based project that aims to conserve the natural heritage of the hill tribes of northern Thailand, the award winning Lisu Lodge, opened in the 1990's, plays a big part in not only the preservation of the Lisu people's heritage but also making it accessible to the outside world in a controlled and responsible manner. The lodge is staffed by Lisu people.

We include evenings with locals in the cities so that our clients also understand the communities within the cities and the challenges they face. This is a great way to understand city life.

Khum Lanna itself is in fact made up of two beautiful, traditional Northern Thai-style teak houses. Each is furnished in rich textiles and woods, and finished in part with locally woven fabrics. The houses are set within the beautiful gardens and orchard. You can do a variety of activities while staying here ranging from cooking classes and learning about the regions wealth in traditional and herbal medicines, to ox-cart and water buffalo rides or cycling to nearby villages and trekking in the surrounding foothills.
