Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Sri Lanka 13 day itinerary

Uda Walawe National Park
The park was established in 1972 as a sanctuary for wildlife displaced by the construction of the Uda Walawe reservoir and covers an area of around 30,821 hectares. The main attraction are the many elephants (about 400 in total). It is not unusual to see whole herds feeding, bathing or just simply playing in the water. The park is also home to water buffalo, water monitors, lizards, sambar deer, monkeys and the occasional leopard, as well as being an exciting location for bird enthusiasts. We work with very experienced rangers within the park and hotels who strive to protect the animals and the habitat they live in. This will ensure you see the wildlife you want in a way which protects the land. Fees paid for park entry go toward the smooth running of the park.

Broadlands Camp
Situated on the Kelani River at Kitulgala, this adventure camp sits right on the riverbank, surrounded by lush undergrowth. Accommodation is simple and comprises of four thatch-roofed tents on stilted platforms and ten larger wooden cabins that will sleep four people. Camps like this let you experience what nature has to offer without disturbing it.

Elephant Transit Home
The Project: The Elephant Transit Home in Sri Lanka, run by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, rescues orphaned elephants and returns them to the wild when they are ready, providing a humane alternative to taking abandoned animals into permanent captivity. The Born Free Foundation supports the general running of the facility and helps make sure the orphans receive the milk, care and medical attention they need. There is no tourist interaction with the orphans for fear of creating an unsafe environment from which elephants are returned to the wild. However meal times can be watched from a sufficient distance.

We launched our One Bottle At A Time initiative to actively replace disposable plastic water bottles with refillable canisters across our destinations. We also send our guests a wooden toothbrush to help avoid using hotelsí disposable plastic brushes, and educate clients about the limited recycling facilities in Asia, and best-practice regarding waste-reduction. Within our UK offices we operate strict recycling policies and make sure everyone in the office uses reusable crockery and cutlery.

Stay & Eat local.
One of our core values is to collaborate with local, responsible companies and partners who share our focus, beliefs and passions. We work with local guides, local operators and hotel partners, and will always offer small, local accommodation where possible, this includes in the cities. Throughout this itinerary we have included boutique hotels, lodges and tented camps in as many destinations as possible, whatever level of accommodation you desire.

Madulkelle Tea and Eco Lodge
There's a wide range of activities to participate in during your stay, including trekking through the surrounding tea plantations and mountain rainforest, learning the secrets behind tea production at the hotelís tea estate, and experiencing country life with a visit to the home of a local family. In addition, the forests surrounding Madulkelle offer some unbeatable bird-watching. The lodge offers hospitality training programs to the locals and 10% of the hotels profits also go back to a local 'community tourism programme'.

Our holidays are designed to enable our clients to immerse themselves in local places and experiences, and we make sure that, wherever possible, the income they bring to a destination goes back into the community and we will ensure people travelling with us understand how their money is benefiting the local communities.
