Description of Northern Cyprus tour

Discover castles and monasteries, unspoiled beaches and traditional villages on this eight day Northern Cyprus tour. After a military coup in 1974 by the Greek army and a subsequent Turkish invasion, the island of Cyprus was divided, and the north became the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The country is inching its way towards unification, but for now, you’ll need your passport to cross the green line that runs through the heart of Nicosia (known as Lefkosia to the Turkish) and throughout the region, places names are in both Greek and Turkish.

This eight day holiday offers a relaxed insight into northern Cyprus, with swimming off pristine beaches, a leisurely day-long boat cruise from Kyrenia (Girne in Turkish) with a delicious Mediterranean lunch, and time exploring the beautiful Karpaz Peninsula, home to the evocatively named Golden Beach and a population of wild donkeys, abandoned after the Turkish invasion. You’ll meet local people too, and on a stay in a traditional village you can join your hosts in some bread and cheese making. Visit St Hilarion Castle, allegedly Walt Disney’s inspiration for the castle in Snow White, the monastery at Bellapais and explore the capital, too. This is a small group tour, with no more than 12 people travelling together, plus a tour leader.

Small group adventure holiday

This is a 'small group adventure' - on this particular group trip you'll be with a maximum of 31 like minded travellers and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are travelling alone or with friends it's good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travellers of all ages who enjoy meeting people from other parts of the world as well as seeing new places!

Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Travel is an opportunity to experience different cultures, meet new people, taste weird and wonderful foods and – for many – get close to wildlife you may have only seen in books or David Attenborough documentaries. We actively discourage the participation of travellers in any activities that exploit wild or domestic/working animals. Northern Cyprus has a population of wild donkeys which still roam freely in the Karpass peninsular, many visitors are tempted to feed them with road side stalls often selling carrots to feed to the donkeys. Our leaders are trained to educate and demonstrate to our travellers that these animals are not domesticated and should not be fed by hand from travellers.

Travelling in a small group allows us to stay in family-run hotels throughout the trip. We also support independent restaurants and cafes, serving locally sourced produce.

In the destinations we visit, we use a "take in, take back out" system in fragile environments, remote areas and national parks. Northern Cyprus has 320 sunny days in a years, temperatures can get warm here. In an effort to reduce the use of plastic we provide our passengers with reusable water bottles. These can easily be refilled from larger bottles or for a small fee at restaurants and hotels.

The Impacts of this Trip

An important part of travel is mixing with the locals and experiencing “real life” in destination. This trip supports a local village initiative to promote a sustainable and eco-friendly experience for travellers. This project works with the local municipality and various stakeholders in the village in respect to accommodation facilities, meals and teachings of local traditions. We are proud to be able to stay in this village and learn about this project and the protection of local heritage through a community approach.

We recognise local issues and actively campaign to address them. Northern Cyprus is a small republic that is only recognised by Turkey as an independent republic. In our company we encourage tolerance of all cultures and this tour includes a tour of the once formidable green line to discover the culture of the North and South. We support the work of such charities as hands across the divide who are bridging the gap between the North and the South of Cyprus.
