Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

We are committed to positive environmental impacts through our Responsible Travel Policy.

As an overland company we have extremely low carbon emissions throughout all our journeys. This departure operates several methods of overland travel including the 9,600km of rail network spanning the Trans-Siberian railway from Vladivostok to St. Petersburg, high speed trains crisscrossing Japan’s cities and countryside and a serene ferry service from Sakai Minato to Vladivostok in Russia’s far east. We employ 4-6 berth cabins and usually allocate around 5 cabins per tour. We find this is carbon and space efficient for the group size and we always encourage our customers to consider sharing not only to benefit the environment but to create a good group dynamic.

We use local partners in Russia who ensure our impact on local wildlife stays at a minimum. In Lake Baikal we take a journey to the Limnological Museum to gain an insight into the lake and its specific inhabitants ensuring our clients have an interesting, rewarding and thought-provoking visit while taking in the beauty of this natural wonder. 5% of all the Limnological Museum entrance fee proceeds are donated to the University of Irkutsk to fund further research into the lake.

We encourage our clients to always be mindful of the local wildlife. During your visit to the Lake Baikal which is famous for it's unique wildlife we will include optional visits the a local Nerpa (Baikal Seal) sanctuary in Listvyanka.

Throughout our journeys we control the use of one time use plastics. Clients are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles that can be refilled during the trip and the tour leader will often buy one large container of water at the start of the trip that can be used to refill the entire group. Plastic bottles are then recycled.

People

We have a very clear mandate to support the local community and without these people and experiences our tours wouldn’t be the same.

In Japan along with hotel stays we accommodate in traditional Ryokan or Japanese inns and in Siberia we stay in traditional Russian guesthouses. This not only provides an authentic experience for our clients but ensures we are using local services and keeping tourism local and within the community. The traditional Japanese inns we use are built using local materials to insulate and these are used to great effect to save energy during the winter months.

In Russia, on the banks of Lake Baikal we stay in a small tourist village, Listvyanka providing much needed tourism year-round ensuring the local markets, artisans and merchants are visited and any goods purchased from them are done at a fair price.

In addition, we partner with local families in Terelj national park, eating local food, experiencing horse riding, archery and experiencing other traditional nomadic ways of life. These are all supported through our long standing local partners ensuring funding is reaching the communities we visit.

We use local guides and city ambassadors who are from the area to see the destination through the eyes of a local and maintain a good working relationship with the community. Dmitrii often leads this tour and is one of our most experienced tour leaders. He is a proud resident of Siberia and his favorite place to visit is a small meditation temple in the mountains of Mongolia. It’s a place of peace and mindfulness, a chance to recuperate and see the world anew and oneself as we are.
