Responsible tourism: Family winter holiday in Lapland with Father Christmas

We always ensure that all rubbish is removed from all the areas we travel to in Finland, to ensure the country is left in the same, if not better condition than when we arrived. We use larger coaches to reduce traffic volume and make customers aware of their impact and obligation to the environment.

Summer is a busy tourism season for Finland, so we are helping to shift the seasonal weighting on this winter trip.

On this trip, our customers are exposed to huskies, moose and deer. Our business has personally visited the farms where animals are kept, guaranteeing they are treated well. All the animals mentioned above are firming entrenched in Finnish winter life and as a business, we would never knowingly contribute to an activity which mistreats animals. The well-being of animals is monitored regularly.

We do appreciate that some may feel that snowmobiles should not be included in such itineraries however, they are part of the way of life for Finnish people during the winter. Alternatives would in most cases be large, gas-guzzling off road vehicles. All snowmobiles are serviced regularly to ensure they run efficiently with limited pollution. The snowmobile service industry is a vital source of employment in these remote areas.

The tap water on this trip is safe to drink. Our tour dossier encourages customers to bring a refillable water bottle to avoid single use plastic.

Tourism in Finnish Lapland is the main source of employment and income, eclipsing forestry. Working within this growth industry in rural and remote areas means that we must take a great deal of responsibility; socially, environmentally and economically. We understand the impact of tourist visits on local communities and their residents and strive to ensure that we are having a positive effect.

This tour interacts with local people. We are very careful so as not to upset or disrupt the careful relationship that exists in this circumstance. We encourage our staff and customers to be respectful and observe any cultures and customs which are different to our own.

In Lapland we use accommodation, transport and activity providers, enabling locally owned businesses and the economies in which they work to benefit directly. Through the tourism multiplier effect, this all helps to generate incomes and employment where the drift might otherwise be towards larger employment areas such as towns and cities.

The use of small family run hotels and businesses means that the tourism income, generated by our presence stays where it should, in the local economy. We firmly believe in paying a fair price for all the services provided by our suppliers regardless of where they are in the world.

Over the past two years, we have contributed to earning (and won an award) over 200K towards Make Some Noise. We also volunteer staff support on the phones when they run fundraising events and donate prizes to help with fundraising.

Our staff raise money for charity events, most recently our head of product who is raising money for Cancer Research by driving a 1958 Morris Minor through Africa. As a brand we also lend support financially to this charity. Iain is 100% self-funded and all money goes directly to the charity.
