Description of Brazil tailor made holiday

See another side to Brazil with this tailormade tour of Bahia in the northeast, during which you’ll be immersed in the state’s distinctly African culture (much of the population is descended from plantation slaves), visit some of the country’s most spectacular beaches along the fondly named ‘coconut coast’, and hike in the magnificent Chapada Diamantina, to see Brazil’s second highest waterfall.

The tour gets underway in the colonial city of Salvador, a tropical melting pot of Afro-Brazilian culture, home of capoeira, and with a fascinating historic core where you’ll take a guided tour. If you wish, you can also take a mouthwatering lesson in Bahian cooking from a local chef.

From Salvador you’ll travel to Lençois in the Chapada Diamantina, an exceptional walking destination. Now a hub for ecotourism, you’ll explore the region on foot, touring underground caves and rivers, and tackling a 12km hike to the steaming Cachoeira da Fumaça, Brazil’s second-highest waterfall and a breathtaking sight.

You’ll take a public bus (an excellent way to meet local people) to Praia do Forte, a renowned coastal resort and superb destination for whale watching tours, to relax for a few days before finishing in Salvador.

This enthralling tour takes you to parts of Brazil most travellers don’t even know exist let alone visit, to wild, remote landscapes and communities, and immerses you in local culture, bringing valuable tourism income that helps preserve traditional ways of life.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

We realise that travel and tourism can benefit as well as harm the environment, the economy and the social and cultural structures of communities. The concept of sustainable tourism - the travel trade’s principles of using tourism to benefit local communities, conserve natural resources, and bolster the survival of cultural heritage – lies close to our heart. Our love and passion for Latin America encourages us to do everything in our power to protect the destinations we take you to. As members of AITO, we are committed to AITO’s Sustainable Tourism Guidelines, which means that we ensure that environmental and cultural demands are kept as low as possible.

Furthermore, we’ve developed strong relationships with local suppliers who all share our vision and agree to uphold a commitment to the safekeeping of the environment and local communities. We will always encourage you to keep a few basic things in mind, including refilling your water bottle, disposing of rubbish in a responsible way and switching off the lights and air-conditioning in your hotel room when you’re leaving your room. Furthermore, we’ve partnered up with Water to Go in hope to reduce plastic waste by offering clients 50% discount on filtered water bottles.

During this holiday you will visit Chapada Diamantina National Park. With 152,000 hectares it is one of the largest Brazilian national parks outside the Amazon region. Since 1980s, the accent here has been on ecotourism. It focuses on the conservation of its river springs and safeguards a genetic bank important for scientific research and conservation of biodiversity. Every year, at least four or five new species of endemic plants and three species of animals are discovered in the region.

In the town of Lençóis in the national park, you will stay at Hotel de Lençóis, which was the second hotel in Brazil to earn the Certificate of Sustainable Tourism Management by the Brazilian Association of Technical Norms. Some of the actions undertaken by the hotel that are part of their sustainability policy are recycling; using all organic waste in the production of compost for their gardens; the use of solar heating for water; sponsoring social, educational and cultural projects in Lençóis; and planting hundreds of trees and other plants in the 10 acre plot of the hotel.

Furthermore, in car-free Morro de São Paulo you will stay at Villa Guaiamu. This friendly and tranquil hotel is situated on the island’s ‘Third’ beach, part of a string of bays that become quieter and less developed the further along you go. Nature trails can be explored here during your stay and the grounds are a nature reserve for the protection of the distinctive blue land crabs, native to the area.

In addition, we prefer to work with accommodation that reflect the environment they are set in. In Salvador for example you will stay at Pousado do Pilar. The building dates back to 19th century and a sense of the city’s colonial past is preserved in its architecture and décor. Especially the lobby is worth to mention, which features panels of exposed stonework and a colourful collection of local art.

We pride ourselves on delivering our clients truly authentic and unforgettable experiences in Latin America which connect travellers with the people whose country they visit. Your holiday starts in Salvador da Bahía, where the influence of Portuguese colonial architecture and culture blends with the African traditions imported by the slaves brought in to work on the plantations. Here, you will enjoy a historic town walking tour. Our guides will point out local markets, shops, bars and restaurants where you have the opportunity to purchase locally produced food and handicrafts – in that way supporting the local economy and promoting the city’s cultural diversity.

Depending on time, you have the options to learn how to cook a few of Bahia’s exotic dishes at a traditional family home in the port, or to visit a traditional Afro-Brazilian dance show. Moreover, Salvador is known as 'Brazil's capital of happiness' due to its countless outdoor parties, including its famous street festival. Taking part in these festivities is a great way to experience the unique cultural mix of this city.

Additionally, we prefer to work with accommodation that are actively involved in the community. Hotel de Lencois for example sponsors social, educational and cultural projects in Lençóis.
