Italy by rail highlights tour

“Explore the grandest cities in Europe’s boot in the most exciting – and environmentally friendly – way on this week-long small group rail tour of Italy.”

Highlights

Rome | Siena | Pisa | Florence | Verona | Venice

Description of Italy by rail highlights tour

Road trips can move aside – this is the year of the rail adventure. Italy is one of the best places to start, thanks to an extensive, reliable high-speed train system. It’s environmentally sound, too, producing almost 75 percent less planet-warming carbon than planes.

The other perks: trains deliver you straight into the heart of some of the grandest cities in Europe. On this small group rail holiday to Italy, you’ll start off in Rome, where a walking guide will take you around the lively Trastevere neighbourhood, the Colosseum and Vatican City. Pisa is up next (street food, ahoy), and then Florence – a city packed with art museums, wine enotecas, and a sky-scraping cathedral.

You’ll finish off in a pair of Shakespearean cities. Peer up at Juliet’s balcony in Verona one day; the next, you’ll be wandering through the labyrinthine streets of Venice, before finishing off with a gondola ride down canals.

Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Environment
Going on holiday is a lot of fun, however in order for it to stay fun for future generations we need to reduce the amount emissions we emit. Carbon emissions have doubled over the last 20 years which is the cause of 5% of all man-made global warming. If aviation was a country, it would be the 7th largest emitter of CO2 in the world. Furthermore, aircraft emit more than just CO2, the impact on climate change could be between two and four times greater than from CO2 alone. If nothing is done about this, aviation will contribute over a quarter of the world's total carbon output by 2050.

To reduce our carbon footprint while traveling we need to change what we eat and buy, where we choose to stay and how we travel from point A to B. Going on holiday by rail rather than flying to your destination is the best way to do this, and it’s more relaxing too!

Here at Euroventure we believe in eco-friendly travel which is why, on average, our interrailing tours are 74% more environmentally friendly than flying! We are not going to bore you with all the figures why train travel surpasses flying, however we believe it is important for everybody know this. Per person, the CO2 emitted per kilometre when flying is 285 grams, with train travel this is only 14 grams!

Travelling by rail is the greenest way to go, and Europe’s network of trains are among the most extensive and environmentally friendly in the world. Almost all rail companies within Europe have electrified their lines, reducing the need for diesel powered trains, which contribute towards significant air pollution issues. The Netherlands’ railway operator has even managed to power their entire rail network using renewable energy making it completely CO2 neutral! The Deutsche Bahn is not far behind!

When travelling, we encourage all our customers to travel with a reusable bottle rather than buying bottles of water every day, reducing the use of single-use plastic. Every hostel and hotel we use has drinking tap water so why not pour yourself a bottle and leave it in the fridge overnight ready for the next day?

When visiting areas rich in wildlife we ensure our customers are aware how to treat nature and all its inhabitants, for example; keeping minimum distances from animals, not using flash photography, not littering, plus other practices in order to keep the disturbances to nature at a minimum.

To minimise our own carbon footprint, we will never send out printed communications such as brochures or newsletters; we provide these digitally on the website, and are more than happy to email you a copy if you like. In the same way, all communication with customers and the trip information is sent through email. Even the custom travel pack all our customers receive is available as an online PDF, reducing the overall impact on the environment even more. If customers still prefer to receive a physical copy of our travel pack, it’s printed on recycled paper and in turn, are 100% recyclable themselves. We also only use Xerox Solid Ink to print our materials, which generates up to 90% less printing waste than more commonly used laser printers! To minimise waste production, we send one travel pack per group of 1-3 or 4 people, which is plenty to go around! Please consider the environment before printing any copies of our communications.

We are a small company with big beliefs. We don’t agree with unnecessary plane travel and we don’t think you should either. Book with us today and do your bit for this beautiful world.
Community

The Impacts of this Trip

As well as our responsibility to the environment, we also recognise our impact on local communities as part of the tourist industry. First and foremost, we are highly aware of the potential impact of mass tourism on local communities, which is why we always aim to encourage sustainable travel, whilst promoting travel as a means of building cultural understanding.

We do not oversell destinations which suffer from too much tourism. We have a certain number of hostel beds available and once these spaces are filled we stop offering the destination to ensure that we don't contribute to the issue of overtourism. This benefits both our customers and the suppliers we work with. Customers trust us to offer an honest service and suppliers trust us to give a reliable yet responsible level of business. We always endeavour to provide ‘less touristy’, locally owned destinations and suggestions for sightseeing in each city that you'll visit.

We particularly encourage solo explorers and small groups of independent travellers to try our trips, ensuring that their cultural experience isn't marred by the dynamics that larger organised group tours can lend themselves to. This also helps to discourage waves of mass tourism in increasingly popular travel destinations.

We have taken the time out to meet with and forge strong personal relationships with our partner hostels and hotels on this trip, in order to benefit both customers, as well as local businesses. Through them we recommend locally based tours, excursions and activities which provide income to local businesses.

We make sure customers are aware of the positive impact they can have on the destinations they are visiting, in particular the smaller businesses. It’s easy to overlook the positive economic stimulus you can have by frequenting local businesses such as shops and restaurants, which is why we make sure all our customers have knowledge of this. We encourage travellers to sample the local cuisine, stay away from global chains and speak to locals for the best recommendations. Some of these are also listed in the personalised travel pack all our customers receive. Not only does this result in a more authentic travel experience, traveling with us will empower you to support locally run businesses and give the opportunity to truly get to know local people.

Besides a more authentic travel experience, showing the restaurants you are willing try the local cuisine shows that they do not need to cater differently to their ‘foreign’ guests. This leads to the food sourced by the restaurants traveling less distance, decreasing the carbon food print of your trip, one dish at a time!

On the Italy tour we include numerous local activities, such as: experiencing the wonders of the Colosseum and Forum in Rome, a daytrip to Siena and Verona; visiting Lamberti Tower and the House of Juliet and having Aperitivo at a traditional Italian restaurant in Florence.

For our customers wondering why we do not include trips to zoos in our packages, this is since keeping animals in zoos deprives them from their natural habitat. The animal is also deprived of its natural social structure and companionship. All in all, zoos are bad for animal welfare.

Lastly, we also encourage our customers to travel with an open, respectful attitude towards other travellers and local residents. We provide basic language essentials in each of our travel packs to help foster cultural immersion and encourage getting off the beaten track to gain a truly authentic experience of each city that you visit.

Back at the office, staff are encouraged to pursue charity projects and volunteering which contribute to the local community, we offer flexible hours to accommodate these projects. In the past year three of our staff have undertaken and continue to undertake regular volunteering, including; teaching English to refugees living in Leeds, providing mental health coaching and support to girls in a local primary school, and helping with rehabilitation projects in a local prison. In addition, staff are encouraged to participate in charity fundraising. In 2017 a team of staff members took part in Race for Life to raise money for Breast Cancer UK.

We employ a range of people living in the Leeds and West Yorkshire region. All employees are paid above the living wage, and we also regularly offer Work Experience opportunities to local and international students. Employees benefit from flexible working hours, with an hour for lunch every day and two additional hours a week to undertake exercise or sport. Training opportunities are provided regularly, and staff are regularly consulted on their progress and ambitions for personal and professional development through twice yearly appraisals.

As an environmentally friendly travel company, we believe that even that even the smallest action can lead to big effect. An action as small as visiting a local business or shop rather than a big international chain, really has a positive impact on local economies. Here at Euroventure, it is our mission continuously encourage travellers to make decisions that benefit the environment and the communities that inhabit it. Book with us today and do your bit for this beautiful world and the wonderful people living in it.
