As members of AITO, we are committed to AITO’s Sustainable Tourism Guidelines, which means that we ensure that environmental and cultural demands are kept as low as possible.

We carefully select our local partners, some we’ve worked with for over 25 years. They have a proven record in training guides to set a good example in their respect for the surroundings and the local communities. We will always encourage you to keep a few basic things in mind, including refilling your water bottle, disposing of rubbish in a responsible way and by staying on designated trails. Furthermore, we’ve partnered up with Water to Go in hope to reduce plastic waste by offering clients 50% discount on filtered water bottles.

We give preference to hotels and lodges which have a verifiable commitment to eco-friendly practices. During this tour you will be able to enjoy many cultural and wildlife-focused experiences from several eco-friendly hotels and lodges such as Lamanai Outpost Lodge in the Belizean jungle. The area the lodge is based is rich in flora and fauna, particularly bird life. From the lodge you can choose from a variety of soft-adventure experiences including howler monkey treks, night walks and a sunrise canoe expedition. What’s more, on the edge of Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve you will stay at Pook’s Hill Lodge, which is embedded in natural landscapes. Pook’s Hill Reserve acts as a buffer zone to the 6,700 acre Tapir Mountain Reserve and is home to over 300 bird species and most of Belize’s mammals, including tapirs and jaguars. The Reserve is listed with the Belize Association of Private Protected Areas.

Researchers use the facilities of Pook’s Hill Lodge to explore the primary rainforest and leave valuable information that is available to the lodge’s guests.
During this trip we encourage you to join activities and excursions that promote and support the local environment. Examples of such activities and excursions are wildlife spotting, bird-watching excursions, visits to Mayan ruins, or sea sports. Especially during guided activities you will have the opportunity to learn more about important topics, such as conservation and the protection of the flora and fauna in the areas you visit.

Community

We pride ourselves on delivering our clients truly authentic and unforgettable experiences in Latin America which connect travellers with the people whose country they visit. During this trip you will have the opportunity to visit a Mayan or Garifuna indigenous community in the southern district of Toledo. Here you can learn more about how their long-standing settlements have maintained their traditions and customs.

Furthermore, you will also visit Lxcacao, a small-scale, family-run chocolate manufacturer in San Felipe. Lxacacao is the only Mayan chocolate-maker in Belize and supplies the famous company Green & Blacks with organic chocolate.

We support accommodation that offer a more personal approach in service, such as home cooking. The Lodge at Big Falls where you will stay for example offers a home cooking experience that includes local as well as international dishes. The Lodge incorporates local vegetables more and more into its menu, and the fish they use in their dishes is sourced from the local market in Punta Gorda. They make their own bread, cinnamon rolls, yogurt, ice cream and freshly baked cakes, and are always willing to share recipes that guests may want to take with them to try at home.

In addition, local guides are on hand to provide advice on the best way to communicate with the local communities, what and what not to buy, as well as acting in a respectful way while taking photographs.
