Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Our Iconic Italy itinerary offers a unique insight in to the myriad ways that Italy utilizes sustainable agriculture. As we explore Liguria and then Tuscany together, our Italian-native guide will help us learn about traditional small-farming practices that have been in place for hundreds of years and how these farms still produce the world-class ingredients they do. A tour & visit to a small Tuscan farm that has consistently won awards from Slow Food for its products will offer in-depth insight into this world. On this trip, our community partner is Slow Food and 5% of trip sales will go to them.

This itinerary focuses on two neighboring regions of Italy, and utilizes group transportation and train transit as well as lots of walking in order to decrease vehicular or air travel.

As always, we'll ensure local and sustainably produced foods in the restaurant selections for our included dinners, and when we buy snacks for the road, we'll prioritize fresh and local bites. As well, on all of our trips, we focus on reduction of plastic and make sure that water jugs are available for refilling personal reusable water bottles. In the event of waste, recycle and composting, we direct client to the appropriate bins and disposal method.

The Impacts of this Trip

The destinations and dates for our itinerary were carefully crafted to avoid the over-crowding and stress that over-tourism can create. While we'll explore the popular destinations of Cinque Terre & Florence, we'll do so outside of any high season months when the largest crowds stress their infrastructures. We also prioritize slightly off-the-beaten cities like Lucca (over Pisa), and Siena & Parma (over Rome or Venice), in addition to more remote countryside explorations.

Along our journey, we prioritize local experiences and in-depth learning about each unique local community. Our Italian-native guide is from this region specifically so she can offer the insight and perspective that only a local can.

As well, we prioritize staying in local, family-run B&B's, and selecting restaurants of a similar character. Our Italian-native guide as well as our vendor hosts are exceptionally talented and passionate about providing a glimpse in to Italy's rich cultural character and broad history. We believe that a sound understanding of the local culture and community is essential to a transformative travel experience, and there is no better way to get that than from hearing through the stories of a local.
