Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

We realise that travel and tourism can benefit as well as harm the environment, the economy and the social and cultural structures of communities. The concept of sustainable tourism - the travel trade’s principles of using tourism to benefit local communities, conserve natural resources, and bolster the survival of cultural heritage – lies close to our heart. Our love and passion for Latin America encourages us to do everything in our power to protect the destinations we take you to. As members of AITO, we are committed to AITO’s Sustainable Tourism Guidelines, which means that we ensure that environmental and cultural demands are kept as low as possible.
We carefully select our local partners, some we’ve worked with for over 25 years. They have a proven record in training guides to set a good example in their respect for the surroundings and the local communities. We will always encourage you to keep a few basic things in mind, including refilling your water bottle, disposing of rubbish in a responsible way and by staying on designated trails. Furthermore, we’ve partnered up with Water to Go in hope to reduce plastic waste by offering clients 50% discount on filtered water bottles.
We strive to use accommodation that reflect the environment they are set in. At all levels, we prefer smaller hotels with some local character: whether boutique, one of a local chain or independent. The Jardin De Iguazu near the Iguazú Falls for example is a lovely hotel with just 30 compact rooms which open out onto the internal garden courtyard – the green of the garden reflecting the natural surroundings of the property. Kenton Palace, the hotel in Buenos Aires, features locally influenced cuisine, and a wine cellar with a handpicked wine list for guests to experience the rich flavours and scents of each geographic region of Argentina.
During this holiday you will visit UNESCO protected Iguazu National Park. The park includes several rare and threatened species: jaguar, South American tapir, harpy eagle and yacare caiman. You will enjoy guided excursions to both the Argentinean as well as the Brazilian side of the falls, hosted by local guides. This include a visit to the National Park Visitor Centre, where there is a display illustrating the biodiversity of the tropical rainforest followed by a natural-gas-powered train ride and a walk to viewpoints. Ticket fees for the National Parks go into the rainforest conservation programmes. These programmes include research, monitoring and management decisions to protect the parks.

The Impacts of this Trip

As a company we support the LATA Foundation, who runs social and environmental projects throughout the continent. In Rio de Janeiro LATA supports Vidarte Space, which runs several projects to help underprivileged children from the favelas of Rio. Their main project is the Vidanca Dance School, which offers children from the favelas the opportunity to express themselves through the art of ballet. The school also provides the children with the opportunity to join in activities that would not otherwise be possible due to their economic situation – such as trips to cultural attractions, Children’s Day and Christmas parties with distribution of toys, clothes and hygiene kits.
Moreover, on this tour we offer a variety of optional excursions and activities which you can enjoy at leisure. From Buenos Aires you can take a trip to the small town of Tigre, set on the banks of the Luján River. Here, you can have lunch at one of the local restaurants, while watching fishermen at work. Another option would be to take a trip out to one of Argentina’s famous estancias to learn more about the traditional lifestyle on these ranges.
Our expert guides are on hand during tours to provide advice on the best way to communicate with the local community, what and what not to buy, as well as explaining the importance of giving gifts responsibly, and acting in a respectful way while taking photographs. Furthermore, as a company we promote the use of local establishments including restaurants, bars and shops and are always happy to recommend a few tried-and-tested options.
