Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Namibia camping safari holiday

Environment

Wildlife:
During this trip we will visit Otjiwarongo's Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF). The CCF is made up of an award winning conservation team whose main aim is to save the future of the cheetah species and has been since the project started in the 1970s. Funds raised through visitor entry fees and donations are used to educate local people, including school children and farmers, on the importance of protecting the world's fastest land animal which is currently also Africa's most endangered. The centre also takes care of orphaned and injured cheetahs, working to rehabilitate them before releasing them back into the wild whenever possible.

During this trip we camp for 7 nights, and while we immerse ourselves in the nature it's also an energy efficient, wildlife-friendly and generally less wasteful way to experience Namibia's wild areas. Many camping areas are within the private grounds of small lodges, they are also well-maintained and offer waste management facilities.

As a travel company we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key, and so all staff, Tour Leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage.

Community

Friend and Neighbours:
Our leaders and crew may come from anywhere in Southern Africa, will know the itineraries well and support our purpose to only have a positive impact on the local communities we visit. If customers would like to shop for a souvenir then our teams will encourage to buy local and responsibly. On this trip we also visit a small Himba community, offering a memorable cultural exchange for our groups and a small, reliable income for the community.

Suppliers:
In the planning of this trip we have looked to use small, family-run campsites and hotels in each location. Due to the vast distances in some parts of Namibia, the hotels/campsites are a main source of employment and in many cases the staff are local to the area, keeping the money in the surrounding areas.

As a company we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of the UK travel industry body AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators.
