Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Over 50s volunteering in Sri Lanka & tour

Our volunteering and tour in Sri Lanka is designed to immerse you in a different culture and living with local people. We source and find accommodation which is low impact to the environment. We prefer locally run hotels as opposed to hotel chains and also have an eco lodge as part of the program where you will be living in a lodge that is made from bamboos and running on solar power.

Though we use private transport rather than public transport. We include train rides as well on this tour. All our volunteers also travel in one van together to minimise the impact on the environment.

Our local team in Sri Lanka make sure that local environment benefit too by conducting activities like a beach clean up in Galle every week. Our head office and volunteer house in Galle is also equipped with recycling facilities to separate out plastic, paper and glass and we encourage these habits with our clients as well.

Training is given on arrival on reminders to not throw rubbish on streets and to keep the environment clean.

We work with local guides and our team in Galle is all from the local area and who will know the area of Galle really well. We also hire most of our service staff such as cleaners, cooks, drivers and others from the local neighbourhood we live in that generates an income for them. We always pay any guides and drivers fair market rates or higher. We also encourage all our clients to give tips to our local guides who are giving them service with a smile.

We support local projects wherever possible. In Galle where our office is based we also operate our own community center that caters to children and womens education specifically. Some of the proceeds from this tour are directed towards this center to enable us to purchase computers, library books and educational resources for the rural children and women living in the Galle region.

All our Volunteer teachers and coaches must have an appropriate qualification, such as a TEFL certificate, a PGCE, sports coaching qualification or another relevant certification in youth work.

Anyone without the relevant qualifications or experience can volunteer as an assistant, supporting the teacher/coach. This could involve helping students practise their conversational English, or helping students carry out written or practical work under supervision by the teacher.

Teaching placements in schools are four weeks but all our out of school programs in our teaching center can be as short as one week.

Volunteer teachers must be at least 18 years old, in line with international TESOL standards which require that teachers should be Ďat a level to access tertiary education.

A minimum of one day's training and orientation is included as part of the placement once in the field. This will provide a background in the local culture, the institution where volunteers will be placed, the students' current abilities and what volunteers will be expected to cover over the duration of their placement.
