Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Winter tour in Russia

A core part of our business practice is to ensure our operations are environmentally responsible, both in our UK office and overseas. In Russia, we have created an itinerary that uses public transport where possible to reduce our footprint, by exploring the city of Moscow using the metro system with its stunning and elaborately decorated stations. We also use trains for the longer distance journeys between Moscow, St. Petersburg and Petrozavodsk. Not only does this reduce any negative impacts, but it adds a sense of adventure!

We encourage all customers to take reusable water bottles with them to reduce single-use plastic wastage while travelling. We are partnered with Water-To-Go to provide a discount on their filter bottles, which are great as you can fill up anywhere and 99.9% of the bacteria is filtered out. So you can fill up from taps, even rivers! It is important to us that our groups do not leave negative impacts behind on their visits, especially in sensitive environments like Kivach Nature Reserve. Customers are briefed on local regulations surrounding conservation efforts and advised where set trail paths must be followed.

In order to offset the carbon emissions of flights booked through us, we have a long-standing partnership with the charity Cool Earth who we donate to for all flight bookings made with us. As responsible tourism isn’t yet a hugely talked about topic in Russia, we create a discussion around this topic with our local partner and with all leaders we train, and educate them on our stance on the subject.

Our itinerary aims to take our small groups to places that you wouldn’t necessarily travel to independently. We aim to spend some of our time getting out of the big cities and exploring more rural areas, so the income from tourism expenditure is spread out.

By travelling in small groups (averaging between 12-16 people), we minimise our footprint and are able to have a more local experience. We travel on overnight trains with the locals, eat in family-run restaurants where possible and support smaller businesses.
We have the opportunity to sample local delicacies and have more local interaction, facilitated by our local leaders who are able to bridge the gap between cultures and languages. Not only does this provide the traveller with an authentic experience, but in places like Kinerma it assists in keeping the culture and way of life alive. Our hotel used in Moscow is in an area which allows you to explore another side of the city on foot, with a local flea market next door and the Vernissage where folk crafts and antiques are sold.
Our Responsible Tourism policy is shared with all local leaders and agents to ensure throughout the supply chain we are all committed to the same goal. We are members of the UK travel industry body AITO, which allows us to share our knowledge and experience as well as learning from other operators
