Responsible tourism: Morocco tour

Environment

We visit the Sahara Desert on this tour. As we are visiting a natural location we like to ensure that we travel in small groups of no more than 12 passengers per departure to minimise impact on natural surroundings and rural desert areas. We make sure we leave nothing but footprints in the desert, encouraging travellers to avoid plastic items to minimise litter which we take away with us when we leave and dispose of responsibly.

This is an excellent opportunity to meet Berbers experience their nomadic desert traditions, food and hospitality. The camp itself as a non-permanent structure which has a low environmental impact. Our night in the desert also means we are able to provide financial support to this tribe. Funds go directly to them and not through a third party, so our visit has a positive impact in providing a source of income to these desert nomads.

Morocco has a very rich history and we include excursions to key sites and places of interest on this itinerary. Entrance fees are included in the package and go towards their maintenance and upkeep ensuring that these culturally significant places are protected for future visitors. Our tour leaders will always brief travellers on how to be culturally respectful in each place and word to make sure they are left exactly as they have been found. This includes not dropping litter or touching anything that must not be disturbed.

Community

As part of our commitment to responsible travel we work closely with suppliers in Morocco who have partnered with the Ait Ouhem Association for development. This is an organisation that is dedicated to achieving their goals of providing local houses with tap water, building a dispensary in the local village to provide medical supplies, purchasing school materials for local children to encourage them to continue attending school, planting more trees and creating a textile cooperative for women so that they can earn a living.

Our suppliers also employ local staff who are knowledgeable on the areas that we visit on tour. Not only does this mean we can provide a more authentic experience for our passengers, but we can continue to support the locals living in the community through working with suppliers who employ locally based guides.

Furthermore, as we are travellers visiting from abroad we understand the importance of adhering to cultural customs and views that may be different to our own. For example, as Morocco is predominantly Muslim, we ask customers to be respectful of the individuals that they approach, and that they adhere to any dress codes required when visiting a sacred or religious site.
