Holiday type
This trip is for families only (including any aunts, uncles or cousins who’d like to come along, of course). As long as you’re travelling with a child under the age of 18, you’re a family in our eyes. Plus, unlike other travel companies, children aged 17 years and younger receive a 10% discount off the price of their trip. Travelling our way is a bit like travelling with a group of friends. Made up of 3-5 like-minded families, the kids tend to hit it off on these trips straight away, allowing you to enjoy some well earned R&R. We often find the whole family ends up making friendships with people from all over the world, staying in touch long after the adventure ends.

Our family group sizes are small enough to avoid the crowds and reach some out-of-the-way places, but big enough for a good social mix. Our average group size of 10 allows us to hop aboard local boats, buses or trains, eat at friendly, family-run restaurants and kick back in traditional accommodation and homestays.

We know the biggest challenge on a family trip is keeping the kids entertained. So we’ve planned in advance. Nearly all of our hotels feature pools, and each day has a great mix of action-packed adventure and flexible free time. Your local leader can also suggest activities based on your kid’s hobbies or school curriculum.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Belize and Guatemala family holiday

Environment

On this tour, all travellers will receive a reusable cloth bag to carry their belongings throughout the trip. Plastic pollution is huge issue in Central America and so this small gesture for our clients will assist in the campaign to stop the use of plastic bags while shopping and visiting market places for souvenirs. We also encourage our travellers to buy large 5-10 litre bottles to refill their small non-plastic water bottles.

Unfortunately, on the vast majority of this itinerary, using local transport is not reliable or at all feasible. So, we use private, locally owned transport instead. However, we always ensure our vehicles/fleets are well maintained and fuel-efficient to minimise pollution.

This trip is run by our own local operator who shares our commitment to responsible travel, from waste and water management to ensuring we are all leaving as minimal a footprint as possible. Our local team are trained on our global responsible travel policies and practices and are dedicated to ensuring these are implemented throughout the trip.

Community

Our company is committed to employing local leaders for all of our trips – and that includes our family range. All of our leaders are specifically trained on responsible travel and are encouraged to live and breathe these principles throughout every departure they lead. All travellers are briefed on responsible travel during their first welcome meeting – which is almost always on the first evening of each trip. We also source produce locally throughout the trip, eat at local restaurants and encourage our travellers to purchase souvenirs from local artisans.

All aspects of this trip (on the ground) are operated by local people including all our leaders, vehicle drivers, local site guides, and accommodation providers. All equipment used on this trip is sourced from local companies (such as the cave tubing, canoes and snorkelling gear).

Our family trips have a maximum group size of 16, which generally consists of three to four families. We believe this is the perfect size for a family trip while respecting the capabilities of the destinations we visit. Overtourism is an issue we are very conscious of and we are taking measures to ensure our impact on the communities we visit and their environment is our top priority.
