Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

In Russia our main impact on the environment is acting as a deterrent for poaching and illegal logging. The poachers and loggers stay away from the areas where leopards, tigers and other endangered species are found as they do not want to get caught, the number of loggers and poachers has also seen a decrease since the rangers and researchers have established the camera trap projects in the area.

With the increase in tourism we hope that the local people who would otherwise take to poaching or logging for a quick pay day will start to see the long term financial benefits of having the forest and the big cats alive and thriving. This is the basic model used throughout areas where poaching and deforestation has occurred elsewhere and we have no reason to believe that if this tour takes off the same principals would not apply.

We also have a non-profit organisation Trees for Tigers which helps to reforest areas of the Russian Far East as well as education local schools about living sustainably with the forests and wildlife within it.

By bringing our clients to this national park in winter we are becoming the only people who use the park for prolonged periods of time during this time of year. This acts as a deterrent for poachers as well as provides a data stream for the wildlife that maybe seen here, particularly the leopards. In addition to our clients getting footage or pictures of the leopards on their trip we provide copies to the national park and their researchers so that population studies and other conservation policies can be updated with new data.

Throughout this trip we use as many locally produced and sourced foods as possible, by doing so we minimize waste as most of these locally produced products have less packaging that mass produced products. All waste we do create in the hides/forests are taken back with us to the city so they can be recycled effectively.

For water conservation our hides are set up with bio-toilets that use tiny amount of water per flush. We make sure that all of our clients are aware of the bio-toilet and encouraged to use the same towel for the duration of their trip, so to reduce water usage in cleaning them regularly.

This trip stays in a forestry managed lodge inside the forest, the lodge (and hide) is only set up for guests for our trips during the winter. We use solar power and battery charging where possible and all power is switched off to the lodge as soon as we leave the property. Only when we have guests inside the lodge do we have clients inside.

We only use one vehicle on this trip, we minimize the amount of driving on the trip, most of the movement on the trip is walking.

All of our local suppliers in Russia are pioneers in establishing eco tourism, they work hard to introduce eco friendly practices such as employing local people, using local products and also saving water and energy as well as being as sustaianble as possible.

The Impacts of this Trip

In Russia the local communities around our forest reserve and national park locations, benefit mostly by tourists coming in and using their facilities and generating extra revenue in parts of Russia where visitors are rare and especially in winter. Just by visiting the area the local people gain an understanding of the international importance of this part of the world and the big cats that occupy it.

This is increasing the number of local people pursuing conservation as a career. These national parks receive very few international tourists and everyone visiting with us will be contributing to the local people’s income as we employ local cooks and guides for our stays inside the park. We also actively encourage the purchase of locally produced sustainable products, this helps add a revenue for local communities and also promotes the continued use of traditional techniques to produce products.

We are a part of a non-profit organisation (Trees for Tigers) which is focused on several aspects of protecting the forests of the Russian Far East, part of this work is concerned with employing the local people in replanting projects and also by supplying school materials and lessons about sustainably using the forest the importance of eco tourism.

As part of our time in Kedrova Pad National Park we can visit a local community and have the chance to understand the local Udeghe community by spending time in a traditional village. Local handicrafts are available here. Our local suppliers have pioneering various local cultural activities including local walks with members of rural communities and also trips and talks about how the local people live in harmony with the environment.

Our guests are encouraged to participate in as many cultural activities as possible. In the Russian Far East we produce educational materials for the local schools, these materials are centered around living sustainably with the forest. Were possible we visit the schools with our clients so they can be directly involved in learning about the work we do to educate local children about eco tourism and also so that the local children can learn about our clients and the reasons people come from all over the world to see their country.
