Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Environment
As the river is crucial for our cruises, we are striving to reduce the negative impact as much as possible on both the river as well as its surroundings. We are fortunate to explore the river banks and surround ourselves with a completely different surroundings and our only duty is to be socially-responsible and take good care of Myanmar.

Waste Management:
The waste of plastic straws and bottles is firmly reduced by the initiative of replacing plastic water bottles for aluminium bottles which can be refilled at water coolers placed in different spots on the ships. Additionally, you will be able to bring this home with you as a souvenir reminding you of your trip and allowing you to continue using it for other travels which will further cut the plastic pollution on the ship. Moreover, the amount of waste on the ship is being reduced by cutting beer cans and introducing you to draft beer.

Additionally, the ship for this cruise is equipped with a gray water tank storing all the onboard waste until they get on shore and find a place where they can deposit the waste in a sustainable way. Hence, this tour will not contribute to the river pollution and it will be maintained properly.
Apart from the water stored in the gray water tanks, there is the drinking water that has to be purified before you can drink it. In order to reduce the use of plastic, we have a RO purification system where we transform the water into drinking water suitable for you.

New trip books have been designed containing detailed itineraries, background information on the history, culture and geography of the river stops. This results in us no longer running the laser printers daily for the use of itineraries and fact sheets which will have a positive effect on the environment.

Transportation:

During the cruise on the Upper Irrawaddy – Mandalay to Bagan, the excursions ashore are a key part of the experience in which you can immerse yourself within the environment and get to know the country and its people. We are striving not to use any cars or coaches wherever possible and, in some cases, only the most basic local transportation is available. For instance, at Katha in Myanmar, you may find yourself in the back of a truck looking for an elephant conservation.

The Impacts of this Trip

Volunteering & Charity:

“I have been engaged with Burma for thirty-five years and Burma has given me much. Our charity is a way to give something back to Burma. It is also a way by which our passengers can say thank you to Burma for so many enriching experiences” spoken by the founder of our cruise ship company. In response to the devastation caused by Cyclone Nargis in 2008. As a result he founded his charity which has gone on to establish 7 clinics in rural locations around Pagan. These clinics are providing the locals with around 5,000 free treatments a month with the support of a full-time team of twenty medics, paramedics and pharmacists.

Furthermore, the boat company is not only giving back to Burma by funding the rural healthcare, but also education. Twelve schools have been built on remote river islands and in rural villages to offer an education to primary-aged children in these communities. Thiri Island is the first to be home to a secondary school founded by the company, allowing village pupils to complete their education.
Several other projects have been developed including the Pandaw orphanage at the Hpondawoo Monastery in Mandalay, which is home to 50 female Nargis orphans.

With each booking, you will contribute to the clinics, schools and other projects of the company's charity to enhance the life of the locals.

Travelling with respect, local crafts and culture:

We want Myanmar to leave a mark on you; therefore, we are doing our utter best to create a unique experience where you will be introduced to the culture, history and traditions of this beautiful country. On this cruise, you will visit the cultural performance of the marionette theatre where you will be introduced to the elegant moves of the people of Myanmar and a themed movie night will be hosted of which ‘The Lady of Burma’ is one of the favourites. Furthermore, there will be additional onboard activities such as cooking demonstrations, fruit carving and a tour of the working ship.

Imagine, making your own discoveries by bike through the pagodas and temples of Pagan or exploring the scenic Burmese countryside and friendly villages at your own page. We provide you with high quality mountain bikes with advised routes to follow for independent exploration at every stop along the way.

Additionally, you will have the opportunity to pay a visit to local markets with the Head Chef of the cruise at least once during the cruise programme introducing you to the local and fresh flavours of Myanmar. Here, you will be introduced to the locals where you can purchase a souvenir to bring home with you or a snack for on the boat. Introducing you to the locals will enhance their economy in a positive way which is a way for us and you to give back to the community.

Another way to give back to the community and have a positive effect on the economy at the same time, is by employing local crew members and guides. They have an extended knowledge about the area and will be able to answer all your questions as well as provide you with an excellent service, showing you the best spots along with magnificent views.
