Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Environment
On day-2 (excluding our Dec departures) this trip visits the Ras Al Jins nature reserve, which was established in 1996 to better protect the sea turtles and their natural environment. The protected area stretches over 120 square kilometres with a 45-kilometre coastline, extending for one kilometre into territorial waters. The governing body allows us to visit the turtle nesting in a controlled and protected environment where you to witness the spectacle in an intimate fashion without fear of interrupting the creatures themselves.

The turtle sanctuary at Ras Al Jinz combines an interactive museum with research laboratories and a wide range of amenities to learn all about the wonders of these ancient creatures in a family-friendly environment. This is included in the tour cost and all proceeds go back into the conservation project.

Along the way we stop at local souks and encourage our travellers to support the local traders which continues the preservation Omanís heritage. We ensure that all of our tour guides and drivers are local individuals, offered good working conditions and fair pay. We endeavour to use locally purchased supplies throughout the trip as well as all local accommodation.

Getting out in nature we spend a night in the Sama Al Wasil Desert Camp, an eco-friendly lodge located in a flat valley 192 km (2 hours drive) from Muscat, in the heart of Sharquiya in Wahiba Sands Oman. The camp is surrounded by wahiba sands dunes, so you can enjoy the feeling of complete seclusion and escapism from the outside world whilst enjoying the delights of local food that is sourced and prepared daily.

YellowWood Adventures are very proud to be working with Pure Hydration, specialists in personal and expedition water purification, instantly, and on-demand.

We recognise that the ability to produce safe drinking water from sources off the beaten track, of sometimes dubious quality, offers incredible benefits to our adventure travellers and so are excited to be subsidising this product to make it more accessible to you. Having a re-usable filtration bottle avoids single use plastic, with each bottle purifying 350L of water. RRP is £39 but YellowWood clients are able to purchase a bottle for £20.00.

The Daymaniyat Islands are the jewels of Oman, a protected group of nine islands, abundant with marine and bird life. The islands with their crystal clear waters offer fantastic snorkelling among the most beautiful corals and colourful fish you can find in the Middle East. We visit the island towards the end of out trip and all monies go back into protecting the conservation of these stunning islands.
Community

The Impacts of this Trip

On this trip we support local communities in the Wahiba Sands Desert giving our travellers the opportunity to purchase handicrafts made by the locals. Buying local handicrafts helps the local trade and allows the Bedouins to support their families.

We use local guides to explain cultures and the way of life to our travellers which enables them to earn a regular living from the visiting tourists. The benefit for our travellers is that by using local guides, they know and understand the local Bedouin people, which enables our travellers to get a better insight into the way of life and cultures and traditions of the local tribes.

Throughout out tour we stay in independent locally owned hotels and additionally we stay in a locally owned Wahiba desert camp which employs local people to help run it. It is furnished and decorated using regional furniture and materials and provides locally sourced food and traditional entertainment to help support the local community. All waste from the campsites is taken away and recycled, leaving no evidence left of any travellers staying in the desert.
