Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Romania family holiday

On this trip we have a balance of time spent in the towns and cities and also out exploring the beautiful scenery on foot, spending time in the little visited Apuseni Natural Park. We will take three countryside hikes during which our Tour Leader will explain about the local fauna and flora and also village life and customs, and about the importance of safeguarding these for future generations.
Apuseni Natural Park is situated in the Apuseni mountain range and is a conservation area containing a highly sensitive ecosystem susceptible to degradation through the pressures of increasing tourist numbers. In order to minimise our impact we endeavour to leave the bus at the hotel and make our excursions on foot or on bike, not only does this allow us to fully appreciate this beautiful area it also helps protect this fragile area, minimising our impact on the natural landscape.
To help reduce the level of pollution within the urban centres we visit, we have adapted our cit tours so these are now done primarily on foot, which is also a great way of seeing all they have to offer first hand. When coaches are being used for these small group trips we keep the size of the coach to a minimum, so rather than using gas guzzling 40-50 seaters we opt for more environmental friendly 15-25 seat coaches that use less fuel and therefore admit less carbon.
As a travel company we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key, and so all staff, Tour Leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage.

Romania is truly a country where old meets new, and now is the time to visit, as since the end of communist rule the country has been constantly evolving and developing and so sadly in a few years’ time, the old way that we can still see today may have been lost. Here you can see large imposing buildings created to show the power of the country’s former communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and in contrast old wooden houses in rolling farmland, horse and carts going to collect water from thermal springs, and charcoal mounds at the roadside where the locals are still making this fuel in the same way as their ancestors have for centuries.

On this trip we’ll get to experience these untouched countryside vistas, elaborate castles, medieval towns, abundant birdlife and more of the wide variety of sights that Romania has to offer, supporting the locals as we go.
On our eight day trip through Romania we stay in guesthouses and small family run hotels. On day two in Moeciu we stay in a guesthouse run by a family that we have sent guests to for over ten years, not only does this help generate money for the local community but guests also get a fantastic experience. Our family groups sit around a campfire after dinner roasting marshmallows with our hosts.
Towards the end of the trip we spend three nights at a small family run hotel in Smida, in the heart of the Apuseni Mountains; produce used in the preparation of meals is sourced within the Transylvania region and all the activities are run by companies in the local area providing much needed employment in a rural area of Romania.
As a company we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of the UK travel industry body AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators.
