Lucca, which is easily reached from nearby Pisa, is a handsome walled city that you’ll explore with a guided tour, before taking to bikes for a ride down quiet country lanes and river towpaths. Have no fear: your guide knows the best places for ice cream.
Leaving Lucca behind you’ll continue on to the magnificent Garfagnana Valley, where a charming, family-run hotel in a farmhouse welcomes you for a few days of fun activities. All the instruction and equipment is provided, as experienced guides lead you around the Orecchiella Nature Reserve to try canyoning (be brave!), stand up paddle boarding and hiking. A highlight for the kids is bound to be a thrilling day in an adventure park, with all manner of swings, nets and rope obstacles for them to race around.
In the afternoons, groups pile back to the farmhouse to relax on the sundeck and in the inviting swimming pool, before feasting on delicious Italian cuisine. Your hosts source as many of their ingredients as they can from the local village, helping to minimise your holiday’s carbon footprint as well as spreading economic benefits to the surrounding community. So do please ask for a second helping.
All activities are of course optional (and most suitable only for kids aged seven and up) but make sure to bring your walking boots, as this trip saves the best for last. You’ll hike up into the national park, with birds of prey in the sky and curious deer in the undergrowth, for a picnic lunch accompanied by some mesmerising views.
A free day is included between Lucca and the Garfagnana Valley, which you can spend as you wish – hop on the train to the beach perhaps, or indulge in some cultural splendour with a day trip to Pisa or Florence. Your guide will be happy to give you all the advice you need.

We stay in a family owned and run agriturismo (farmhouse) in rural Tuscany. Our accommodation has been owned by the same family for over 20 years. The farm is run in as environmentally a way as possible using solar panels for hot water and heating in the cooler months as well as voltaic electric producing panels that produce 20kw of electricity per day. Each cottage has a wood burner, the wood coming from their own woodland that naturally re generates, they never clear fell and being sourced within the farm itself there is no additional transport needed to bring the wood onsite.
We use the train to get to and from Cinque Terre and pedal power on the cycling day is one of the most sustainable and low impact forms of transport, so it’s a great way to keep your carbon footprint (and waist measurement!) low. In addition we have a walking day in Orecchiella National Park which has low impact on the environment, minimising our impact on the natural landscape.
As well as being low impact, cycling and walking are great ways to get closer to the local way of life as you can easily stop and visit offbeat places, chat to the locals… so it’s friendly and environmentally friendly.
As a travel company we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key, and so all staff, Tour Leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage.

The Garfagnana area of Tuscany is a rural community which we support by sourcing food products produced in the village. For the meals that are not taken at the farmhouse, guests are welcome to try a number of nearby local restaurants and bars, keeping tourist euros in the community and providing a source of employment.Italy is without doubt one of Europe’s most fascinating and varied countries and this part of Tuscany one of its best kept secrets. We uncover some of hidden treasures of this beautiful and quiet corner of Tuscany with the help of our tour leader who will be able to explain aspects of the history, wildlife and culture of the region. During our active week of adventure we visit a adventure park in San Romano, explore the backstreets of Monterosso, canyon in the Turrite valley and bike from San Pellegrino - all these activities help support rural communities and local businesses.
As a company we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of the UK travel industry body AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators.
