Description of Thailand 19 day holiday

Uncover a side to Thailand that few tourists see with a 19-day tour of historic sites, cultural experiences and visits to areas of unspoiled natural beauty. This is the full rainbow of Thailand, from Bangkok to beach paradise.

You'll start in the electric capital, where a local guide will give you insider knowledge at must-see attractions, including the Grand Palace, the city's extensive canal system and the stunning temples of Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Po.

Next, you'll head to Kanchanaburi (stopping to visit floating markets en route), the site of the infamous "Death Railway" built between Thailand and Burma (now Myanmar) by prisoners of war during World War II. This is also the site of Erawan National Park, home of lakeside tranquillity and trickling waterfalls.

You'll then fly to the northern city of Chiang Rai, visiting the local night market with a local guide, the iconic white temple of Wat Rhong Khun and cruising down the Kok River to participate in a homestay with the hill tribes of Mae Kampong.

Then, it's on to cultural capital Chiang Mai, where you'll take part in a cookery class and climb to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, before meeting the gentle giants of Elephant Nature Park (a verified ethical elephant sanctuary).

After so much adventure in northern cities, you'll fly south to Surat Thani, where you'll enjoy a day tour of Khao Sok National Park, complete with canoeing, rafting, trekking and caving activities.

Finally, you'll end your tour of Thailand with three days on Phuket, the country's largest island, where you can unwind and relax on the beach. Don't miss the Hong by Starlight experience; a day of kayaking and hong (cave) exploration, culminating in an after-dark excursion to see the caves lit up by bio-luminescence.

This comprehensive itinerary is specially designed to bring you the very best that Thailand has to offer: from interactions with traditional hill tribes to learning to cook Thai cuisine with a local couple, to exploration of the country's natural beauty - this tour takes a deep delve into the magic of Thailand, where few have the opportunity to go.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

As with all of our luxury holidays, this itinerary has been crafted to ensure that it positively effects the local communities and environments visited.

This itinerary includes trips to some of Thailand's protected areas of natural beauty, including Erawan National Park, Khao Sok National Park and the UNESCO-listed city of Chiang Mai. By visiting these sites (all entrance fees are included in your luxury tour), you are supporting the protection of these areas, and indicating to authorities that tourists are interested in protecting Thailand's incredible natural environments.

Whilst exploring areas of natural beauty, such as national parks and beaches, please ensure that you don稚 leave any litter everything you carry in, you must carry out. Aside from the environmental damage, litter can be harmful to wildlife.

We also make a special effort to recommend activities and accommodation providers which have responsible and sustainable initiatives. For example, Elephant Nature Park is an ethical elephant sanctuary which rescues, treats and rehabilitates elephants previously used for logging, riding and entertainment purposes. A trip here helps provide much-needed funds for the elephants (many of which suffer health problems as a result of their mistreatment, leading to them being abandoned by their previous owners) and makes you an ambassador for elephant welfare, educating friends and family about your trip and the ethical ways to interact with elephants in Southeast Asia.

All the local guides referred to in this itinerary are paid a fair wage. We believe that using local guides is important, as it helps generate local incomes and creates jobs, plus it offers a more authentic travel experience.

We recommend independent local hotels, lodges, guesthouses and campsites, rather than international chain hotels, which helps support local communities and allows you to experience true Thai hospitality. For example, Six Senses Yao Noi, located on a remote island in Phang Nga Bay between Phuket and Krabi, has a focus on sustainability in both minimising its impact on the environment and benefiting the local community. The resort participates in the Geo-Life Clean Water Project, funds medical supplies for the island's hospital and donates to local schools for English-language programmes and sponsorships.

This Thailand holiday also includes the option for cultural experiences learning about local traditions with trips to hill tribe villages, where you can also engage in cultural exchange as part of a homestay experience (this provides traditional communities in these areas with income). What's more, getting to know a destination and the diverse people who live there means that you will have a more authentic and meaningful travel experience.
