Description of Antarctic 8 day tour

Our 8-day Antarctic Express itinerary offers an opportunity to experience the magic of Antarctica in just one week.

You’ll avoid the notorious two-day Drake Passage crossing; instead you’ll take a charter flight from Punta Arenas in Chile. You’ll land on King George Island, the largest of the South Shetland Islands and home to a small human population gathered around the research centres. You’ll have time to explore the extraordinary lifestyle here before boarding your expedition ship bound for the Antarctic Peninsula.

As you sail from King George Island, you’ll get your first glimpses of Antarctica from the huge ice sculptures floating offshore and you’ll soon touch down on the continent, leaving your footprints in the snow as you explore this icy wonderland.

You’ll spend four incredible days exploring the Antarctic Peninsula, making shore excursions to spot whales, penguins, seals and more, plus you’ll have a chance to learn about Antarctica’s incredible wildlife, interesting geology and intriguing history from our expedition team.

You can try activities such as kayaking or stand-up paddle-boarding along the calm waters, or you can challenge yourself with snowshoeing and mountaineering. You’ll also have the option to camp overnight on the Antarctic continent - a truly unique experience!

Our Fly the Drake: Antarctic Express itinerary is ideal if you’re short on time or looking to make the most of the days you have, so you’ll experience only the best scenery and wildlife of the Antarctic.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

This Antarctic cruise offers inclusive Carbon Neutral voyages and all vessels use Marine Gas Oil (MGO), a clean burning fuel with a low emission factor. This expedition also only serves sustainable seafood aboard the ship, uses eco-friendly laundry chemicals and bathroom products and adheres to international regulations for the disposal of waste at sea. All ships are nearly paperless, and any paper used is 100% recyclable.

This Antarctic expedition is operated in line with standards set by the IAATO and AECO to ensure sustainability is maintained and tours have low impact. Crew, staff and passengers are briefed on environmental guidelines and the science behind them before embarking.

Many of the talks and lectures provided by the ship’s team of experts focus on conservation and the environment, and you are encouraged to return home and share what you’ve learned with loves ones in order to spread the message on the importance of preserving the planet.

All visitors to Antarctica are bound by the Antarctic Treaty and the Protocol and must comply with environmental regulations. Visitors must never disturb the Antarctic wildlife. You cannot touch, feed or do anything to alter the behaviour of animals. Keep noise to a minimum and avoid flash photography. If you keep still and quiet, animals may approach you, however you must never interfere with them. Avoid damaging the unique plant-life. You’ll come across unique moss, lichen and herbs which can take decades to grow, so don’t damage or step on them.

Everyone must undergo rigorous decontamination procedures before stepping on land. Boats, shoes (you’ll be provided with special boots), clothing and equipment must be vacuumed and disinfected to avoid the introduction of new species to the delicate Antarctic ecosystems.
