As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) holiday so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
PlanetOur Colombia itinerary has a heavy focus on environmentally responsible travel, conservation of the country’s biodiversity and fresh, local food. We work with local partners that have an eye toward eco conservation and protection of the landscape, including our coffee farmhouse stay which is Rainforest Alliance certified. We also work with restaurants and farms to find organic, local foods whenever possible that are also culturally appropriate. Any time we buy snacks for the road, we look for fresh and local bites; in Colombia this might be fresh fruits, plantains, corn, or fresh cheese.
During our hike, we will pack out any waste and also learn about the preservation of Colombia’s national tree, the Wax Palm.
On all of our trips, we focus on reduction of plastic and make sure that water jugs are available for refilling personal reusable water bottles. In the event of waste, recycle and composting, we direct client to the appropriate bins and disposal method. In Colombia, safe, filtered water is easily available at our accommodations and restaurants. We also provide guests with a special discount code for a Grayl water filter if they'd like to reduce plastic waste even more by drinking filtered tap water.
PeopleOur Colombia itinerary prioritizes locally owned suppliers including our boutique hotels, coffee farm, local guides, transportation providers, and restaurants. Our Medellín hotel is an especially beautiful boutique eco-hotel very involved in the community and using sustainable architectural design.
Our coffee finca is locally owned and involved in the coffee triangle community, an important area both economically and for biodiversity.
This itinerary also has an eye toward social justice. During our visit to Comuna 13 in Medellin we learn how this barrio was transformed from a dangerous neighborhood, especially through its youth. 5% of trip sales are donated to this community partnership. You also have a chance to meet local artists, and support their work.
Also, our coffee farm experience is Fair Trade certified, and you will learn about the rigorous standards the farm must meet to ensure fare wage and a safe working environment is provided to all of its employees. We believe that a sound understanding of the local culture and community is essential to a transformative travel experience.
We provide opportunities to explore restaurants and cafes on your own, and we'll always point you in the direction of those which are locally owned.
