Description of Peloponnese cultural holiday in Greece

Have a great Greek escape on the Peloponnese peninsula – a corner of mainland Greece famous for impressive classical ruins, long sandy beaches and rich natural beauty. There’s no better place to enjoy this special part of the world than from Lavender Lodge, a wooden lodge surrounded by terraces of herbs, with a pool, air conditioning and a wood-burning stove. Your hosts, Tamara, the aromatherapy expert and Bill, your archaeological tour guide, will be delighted to have you.

You’ll be welcomed to your new home – a stunning eco log cabin in the countryside – with a home-cooked Greek meze feast and a hamper of homemade goodies. Spend time in the aromatic herbal gardens or relaxing by the pool, and enjoy uplifting therapeutic massage and artisan aromatherapy workshops with Tamara. She can share several years’ experience in herbal healing with you and teach you how to create your own balms and soaps with her hand-blended essential oils.

When you’re not relaxing at the lodge your hosts will take you on cultural trips. There are fascinating historic finds to be discovered on trips to Olympia and Messene. Bill, an Oxford Classics Graduate who has been running tours for over 30 years, will be your expert guide. There are delicious sensory experiences, too: like shopping in the Kopanaki Market for kalamon olives, artisan cheeses and local honeys for a cookery class. There are beautiful beaches: just 2 km away stretch the unspoilt, protected beaches of Kyparissia bay, where the baby turtles hatch throughout July and August. Safely snorkel in sparkling waters and take sunset swims, knowing that you’ll warm up later by the wood-burning stove in your lovely lodge.

Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Environment
We have made substantial donations to Archelon, the Sea Turtle protection society of Greece which operates along Kyparissia bay and we include a conservation visit in our itinerary of activities when appropriate. We employ local professional skippers for our boat trips and support all local tourist conservationist enterprises.

Energy efficiency: We heat our properties by using wood-burning stoves to burn our own wood which has been naturally pruned each year from our olive trees. We heat our water with solar panels.

Water use and conservation: We encourage all guests to save water through the use of appropriate signage. We use waterbutts and onsite underground reservoirs around the property to conserve natural rain-water for irrigation of the land and for any other use.

We grow most of our own food and obtain the rest from local suppliers. We run every trip from a standpoint of environmental conservation, highlighting issues of pollution, litter or any action contrary to the preservation of the ancient artefacts or cultural importance attached to the sites which we visit.

Recycling: We provide separate recycling bins for our guests at Lavender Lodge and we dispose of these appropriately, recycling as much paper, plastic cardboard and glass as we can.

The Impacts of this Trip

We are committed to our policy of employing local skills wherever possible. We aim to work in accordance with local practices, customs and expectations regarding olive farming and sustainable living.

We support our local business by buying exclusively from them for all of our farming requirements.

We employ local olive pickers and farm maintenance workers when necessary and use the local press for our harvests.

Before each archaeological trip all guests are given information covering the history (both social and political) of the place to be visited in the form of a talk followed by a guided tour and they are provided with access to up to date guide book material

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Every experience we had on this magical holiday was fun and memorable. The most adventurous activity was hiking into a gorge and then entering a stream where we walked through the water into a cavernous area with stalactites and a surprise at the end!

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

Be prepared to have a variety of fun and interesting experiences where you will learn new information and skills which may in fact change your life.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, we went to several small locations where local people benefited from our business. Recycling and composting were practiced at our lodging and on all our walks our hosts picked up trash in order to conserve the natural beauty of the surroundings.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

This stands out as one of the best holidays we have ever had. Mainly because our hosts personalized many aspects of the holiday in order to meet our needs and wants. The itinerary was well crafted to offer a variety of activities that were well paced. For example, one day we visited archeological sites and then the following day we participated in making creams and soaps. In addition our hosts were especially thoughtful and caring and tuned in to what we might enjoy or need.
