Description of Family cycling holiday in the Algarve

The eastern Algarve – the part closest to Spain – is so often described as the region’s ‘best kept secret’ that you would have thought it would be spoiled by now. But it’s not. Here, where the wild Guadiana river runs, there are beautiful beaches, salt pans and tiny towns.

Cycling is the way to go. Even in winter, this area has great weather for cyclists, and you can easily take the whole family, and kids aged 10 and over. On this week long trip, you’ll cycle along quiet, pretty back roads and through fragrant orchards. The relatively short mileages mean everyone can enjoy the holiday. You can even choose to make things easier with the help of an e-bike.

You’ll be picked up from Faro and start your trip at a beach hotel, before heading to Vila Real Santo Antonio, a border town on the Guadiana River estuary. Next enjoy Tavira town and then head on to the Sapal nature reserve to observe brilliant birdlife. End the trip exploring Crusader history and the castle at Castro Marim, before heading to the strange salt pans, where a spa day is an optional extra to end your cycling.

You can hire a hybrid, road or e bike for this trip – or bring your own. En route, stay in Bed and Breakfast hotels and travel reassured you have route assistance from the support staff when you need it.

Carbon reduction

Your holiday will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this holiday and how to reduce them.

Environment

We are very aware of the environmental impact caused by tourism in our unspoiled region of the Baixo Guadiana, which has the most nature reserves and protected areas in the Algarve and Alentejo.

Our region is known for its deserted beaches, lagoons, world class bird reserves, ancient salt pans, pristine forests and orchards, blue lakes with mountain streams and the international Guadiana River estuary. We also have the warmest climate and more sunshine than anywhere else in Spain and Portugal.

All our routes and trails associated with the GR15 are fully marked, giving you more time to appreciate the landscape, minimizing the impact on unspoiled forests and fields.

This is a cycling trip, which by its nature is low in emissions. We try to use apps, electronic maps and guides as much as possible to avoid printing. We encourage recycling at the eco points in the villages and at our hotels.

We recommend the consumption of local meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, and encourage people to drink from the tap and refill their own bottles.

All our hotels use solar energy to reduce energy use based on fossil fuels. They have also adopted policies to minimize laundry (for towels and sheets) and show guests how to save energy.

Community

Our region is the poorest part of the Algarve and the Alentejo. Most of our villages and towns are isolated and suffer from mass migration to large urban areas on the Western coast. The older generation stayed behind and depend on subsistence farming and welfare grants.

Responsible tourism that respects nature, local people and their culture is the only sustainable economic activity that will create business opportunities and youth employment. All our staff and those of our service providers are locals.

We take our guests on amazing experiences that are natural and very authentic. Allowing them to interact with local people who are very welcoming.
Our small, comfortable and charming hotels are owned by local families that will welcome you with open arms.

Try the local cafés and restaurants on our recommended list for delicious seafood and meat dishes, don't forget the unique cakes and desserts that are inspired by the local fruit.

The taste and quality are amazing because everything is cooked fresh and sourced at local farms that use traditional organic farming techniques.
