Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Though a minimal amount of time during this trip is spent within nature, we work hard to ensure our travellers are as environmentally-friendly in any areas possible, no matter how small.

Given the culinary nature of this tour, there is an emphasis on seeking out local food and discovering regional cuisine. The positive environmental impact of this is twofold: eating local food supports local agriculture (rather than less eco-friendly mass agriculture) and reduces ‘food miles’, the carbon emissions that come from transporting food long distances.

For a number of beneficial reasons, both environmental and social, where possible we use homestays and locally-owned accommodation rather than large hotels on all of our tours. On this tour in particular, the homestays selected have a small but significant positive environmental impact. Firstly, there is the factor of general lower energy expenditure compared to a hotel; secondly, a number of the homestays on this itinerary are farms which serve guests home-grown produce and have eco-friendly systems in place, from using solar power to repurposing food waste and recycling their animals’ methane emissions.

We ensure our guides are mindful about protecting the environment in which you travel, and they do a fantastic job of promoting having a minimum impact to the environment whilst travelling. We ask you to be vigilant about disposing of your waste and recycle where possible. During your trip you will be asked if you have any waste to dispose of when it is a suitable time in the itinerary. This ensures we make it as easy as possible for our travellers to be eco-friendly whilst travelling. Similarly, we strongly advise all travellers to bring a reusable water bottle - this is an easy way to save plastic waste and is detailed in our ‘What to bring’ trip notes for all trips to all destinations. Your guide will remind you where and when you can fill up your re-usable water bottle. We also encourage general sustainability - limited use of air-con for instance.

The Impacts of this Trip

Given the nature of this tour, there is a strong emphasis on the culinary arts of every location our travellers visit. This means there are far more stops at local restaurants and eateries than in any typical tour; similarly, during the tour, our travellers take part in a number of culinary-based classes and even take meals and cook with local families in their homes. These many stops provide economic support for local businesses in the areas we visit, as well as the broader communities as a whole.

Additionally, in all other areas of this tour, we use locally-owned accommodation as a priority, and employ local guides who are offered fair pay and good working conditions. At one of this tour's farm accommodations, staff are all local villagers, so the use of this homestay directly supports sixteen local families, allowing them to educate their children and build their own homes

We support the communities in every location on this tour, both urban and rural, by contributing to WaterAid. For every booking we receive we make a token contribution to this admirable charity. WaterAid works together with the Government, organisations and communities, to tackle challenges caused by a lack of access to clean, sustainable drinking water head on, and we are proud to support this charity.
