Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Environment
On this trip, we'll be visiting two fascinating Silk Road countries and doing our bit to protect the local environment. Two countries on the brink of tourism, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan need to be looked after by those who visit - and that means respecting the rules of responsible travel.

We will be doing the following to manage the environmental impact of our operations:

-On several nights during this trip, you will be staying in sustainable homestays and yurt camps in the Uzbek desert and Kyrgyzs mountains. Staying in this kind of sustainable accomodation is not only better for the environment, but it also helps to protect the local landscape. By showing that we - as travellers - can be accomodated in this way, we are limiting the demand for new hotels and other damaging tourist infrastructure.

- Guests on this trip will be encouraged to eat locally sourced food at family-run homsetays, desert yurt camps, family-run restaurants, mountain homestays, bazaars and more. Plenty of food will be eaten that is sourced locally in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan - including plov and Uzbek non - therefore reducing the food miles behind what we and our guests consume.

- As a founding member of one rewilding scheme, and an active partner of another, we are doing our best to reduce our carbon footprint. Each year, we plant 28 trees as a part of these schemes to reduce carbon in our environment and support biodiversity. Once these trees have grown, woodland animals - including bears, wolves and lynx - will be able to return to their habitats.

- As part of this itinerary (and all of our trips) we provide water filtration bottles to all our customers. We strongly encourage them to be used as alternatives to bottled water so to reduce single use plastics.

- At our UK based office we source all of our energy from renewable sources, keep the paper usage as low as possible and have a strict recycling policy
Community

The Impacts of this Trip

This trip has a focus on engaging with local communities and learning from them. In Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, you'll meet lots of different people, from yurt-dwellers in the Kyrzl-Kum desert to yak herders in the Kyrgyzs mountains.

- We always work with local guides to ensure specialist skills and knowledge are retained in the local community and to be certain that tourism income is kept within the local economy.

- By joining us on this trip, you'll also be investing in the local community by staying in family-run homestays, saddling up with eagle-hunters, listening to performances from local musicians and more.

- In the Kyrgyz highlands, you'll be meeting isolated communities that rarely welcome visitors. This includes several yurt camps - some on the banks of gurgling rivers and others beside sprawling lakes - and in doing so you are helping to sustain this nomadic way of life for generations to come.
