Carbon reduction

Your holiday will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this holiday and how to reduce them.

Environment

Perhaps the most significant environmentally-responsible aspect of this tour is the accommodation, or rather lack of. The majority of the nights on this trip are spent camping, with only a few overnights in hotels or lodges; camping has almost no environmental impact, so the accommodation on this tour is as eco-friendly as any tour can possibly offer. Similarly, the majority of the travel between locations is done on foot, and occasionally by shared car, meaning the negative environmental impact caused by transportation on this tour is incredibly low.

We ensure our guides are mindful about protecting the environment in which you travel, and they do a fantastic job of promoting having a minimum impact to the environment whilst travelling. We ask you to be vigilant about disposing of your waste and recycle where possible. During your trip you will be asked if you have any waste to dispose of when it is a suitable time in the itinerary. This ensures we make it as easy as possible for our travellers to be eco-friendly whilst travelling. We strongly advise all travellers to bring a reusable water bottle - this is an easy way to save plastic waste and is detailed in our ‘What to bring’ trip notes for all trips to all destinations. Your guide will remind you where and when you can fill up your re-usable water bottle. We also encourage general sustainability - limited use of air-con for instance (in the few instances applicable on this trip). These are values and practices we hold very strongly as a company, and ones we try to pass on to our travellers.

Community

Given the nature of this tour, very little time is spent within communities. In the few instances that our travellers are in inhabited regions – primarily at the beginning and end of the trip – we have worked hard to ensure their presence benefits the communities they are in to the greatest possible extent. This includes trips to a number of museums, ones which, like many, rely on the economic support that tourism brings to continue to function, and ultimately to continue to preserve and exhibit the proud history they contain. Additionally, the trip includes a number of excellent opportunities for our travellers to support the communities they visit through economic means; these include stops at markets and a few local eateries, and the chance to purchase the region’s famous salt directly from the locals.

Another very significant benefit of this tour is the use of guides, which given the heavy emphasis on trekking, far exceeds that of a typical tour. The guides used on this tour are knowledgeable local people, who, as a result of this tour, are able to share the lands they love with travellers and find gainful employment in doing so. All of our guides, drivers and other local employees of any description are offered fair wages and working conditions. Furthermore, we endeavour to use locally-sourced supplies from local suppliers wherever possible as just one more small but significant means to benefit the communities visited on this tour.

We are proud to support the communities in Ethiopia by contributing to WaterAid. As far as having access to clean water is concerned, Ethiopia has made significant positive steps over the last two decades thanks to WaterAid, but there is still a long way to go. Today, almost four in ten of the country’s 99 million people don’t have clean water – that’s almost 60-million people. In order to continue their vital work which has, quite literally, a life-saving impact, WaterAid relies on the donations of supporting patrons. With that in mind, for every booking we receive for this trip we are proud to make a token contribution to this notable cause.
