Carbon reduction

Your holiday will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this holiday and how to reduce them.

Environment

Many of the villages visited on this itinerary are set within rural locations; due to this, we ensure our guides are mindful about protecting the environment, and they do a fantastic job of promoting having a minimum impact to the environment whilst travelling.

One area where we are able to be environmentally responsible is travel. This itinerary has been arranged so that all of the travel between locations is done on foot, in shared cars and boats, and even by bike. Though it is a small factor, our dedication to environmentally-friendly transport has a significant benefit over time.

This tour supports the Elephant Valley Project, Cambodia’s only registered NGO elephant sanctuary. The sanctuary consists of 1500-hectares of forest, river and grassland, not only providing a safe home for its 10 elephants, but protecting the vast natural area itself and the many other animals of its ecosystem. The project’s official recognition as an NGO ensures the protection and wellbeing of these beautiful creatures while allowing visitors to interact with them, and with hope, develop a greater desire to protect these animals on a larger scale. As a note to our travellers: though you will have the chance to interact closely with the sanctuary’s elephants, you will not be able to ride them, and we do not support or condone this practice.

Finally, we ask you to be vigilant about disposing of your waste and recycle where possible. During your trip you will be asked if you have any waste to dispose of when it is a suitable time in the itinerary. This ensures we make it as easy as possible for our travellers to be eco-friendly whilst travelling. Similarly, we strongly advise all travellers to bring a reusable water bottle - this is an easy way to save plastic waste and is detailed in our ‘What to bring’ trip notes for all trips to all destinations.

Community

As regular travellers, one thing that never ceases to amaze and inspire us is the kindness and generosity of local people, and we firmly believe that it is them that make these places special and that they should benefit from our visit. For that reason, we use local guides who are offered fair working conditions and pay, and as a priority, stay in local accommodation and visit local shops, bars and eateries in order to have the maximum possible economic benefit on the local communities our travellers visit.

This itinerary includes visits to a number of rural villages, during which time our travellers have the opportunity to take in the rich cultures of the local people over lunch or dinner. A number of meals will be taken either in family homes or with the village as a group; not only is this an excellent opportunity to socialise closely with local people, but support them through direct economic means too.

Not only does the Elephant Valle Project work to protect animals and the environment, it benefits local communities too. 50% of the charity’s funding goes into social projects, so in addition to the many local people they employ directly, a few of their achievements include providing 2400 local people with healthcare and helping over 300 local children get into education. The positive impact of the project is deep and varied, and we are proud to support them in all they do.
