Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Given the wildlife-focused nature of this trip, much time is spent within nature – as a result, we have worked hard to ensure the tour is as environmentally-friendly as possible, in both urban and natural landscapes.

In Rio, our travellers visit the city’s botanical gardens, home to thousands of species of flora and fauna; the income that tourism provides is significant in the maintaining of the gardens and ultimately the preservation of the many species found there. When in natural areas such as the Amazon jungle, we are reliant on our knowledgeable local guides when exploring the landscape, and they do a fantastic job of protecting the often fragile ecosystems our travellers are in. Similarly, when exploring these areas, we use environmentally-friendly means of transport such as walking, canoeing and riding on horseback. When travelling between much further locations, we have arranged more eco-friendly transport where possible, and the few internal flights of this itinerary have only been included due to strict necessity – we believe the benefits of our responsible tourism in these remote locations outweigh the negative impact of the flights.

The accommodations used on this trip have also been selected with strong consideration for the environment. The locations for overnight stays on this itinerary include a few small-scale hotels and two eco-lodges, one of which works with local non-profit organisations to restore a large nearby area of lake and surrounding forest.

Finally, to our travellers, we ask you to be vigilant about disposing of your waste and recycle where possible. During your trip you will be asked if you have any waste to dispose of when it is a suitable time in the itinerary. This ensures we make it as easy as possible for our travellers to be eco-friendly whilst travelling. We strongly advise all travellers to bring a reusable water bottle - this is an easy way to save plastic waste and is detailed in our ‘What to bring’ trip notes for all trips to all destinations. Your guide will remind you where and when you can fill up your re-usable water bottle. Similarly, we ask that you are environmentally conscious in other areas when possible, e.g. using air-conditioning sparingly.

The Impacts of this Trip

As regular travellers, one thing that never ceases to amaze and inspire us is the kindness and generosity of local people, and we firmly believe that it is them that make these places special should and that they should benefit from our visit. As a result, we stop at local shops and restaurants and use locally-owned accommodations as a priority, and we use supplies from local retailers, all to have the greatest benefit possible to local economies. This trip makes extensive use of guides and drivers, all of whom are local people offered fair pay and working conditions.

Though much of this trip takes place in natural areas with minimal populations and only few communities, there is still a significant benefit to those communities that this trip does touch upon, as well as excellent opportunities for our travellers to support local people themselves. One stop on this itinerary is in a native Amazonian community, during which time our travellers will take a meal with a local native family and learn about their traditions and beliefs. Not only is this a fantastic opportunity, but it provides monetary support than is hugely impactful on communities as remote as these. Additionally, in the few instances our travellers are in populated areas on this trip, stops such as the local market in Manaus are an excellent opportunity for them to purchase local goods directly from local businesspeople themselves.
