Responsible tourism: St Lucia birdwatching tour, small group

Environment

St Lucia has emerged as one of the more preferred eco-friendly destinations in the Caribbean. St Lucia’s lush vegetation and tropical rain forest, which lends itself to hiking, bird watching, and a whole host of nature-related activities, has long made it a favourite of those who are seeking a quieter, more environmentally friendly tourism experience.

Almost 35% of St Lucia is still under some form of forest cover and over a third of this is protected within the Government Forest Reserve. Most of the areas that you will visit to look for birds and wildlife are maintained and protected and the park fees that are included in this tour, help towards this. The Forest Reserve supports the entire breeding population of St Lucia Parrot and a large percentage of the St Lucia Black Finch population. It also protects all but one of the restricted-range birds that occur on St Lucia.

All our tours in St Lucia are led by a trio of amazing local guides - Adams, Vision and Willow, who live and breathe St Lucia’s forests and wildlife. For instance, Adam's previously worked for the Government Forest Service and has now fully dedicated his time for birding; volunteering his time in conservation, inventorying and producing a photographic database of birds and wildlife on the island of Saint Lucia and has even written the definitive book on the subject. He is also a long-standing member of Birds Caribbean, which is a vibrant international network committed to conserving the Caribbean. Our tours are therefore sensitively designed by experts according to the highest of environmental standards.

Community

Environmentally conscious travellers look for accommodation that subscribes to an eco-friendly ethos and all the hotels that we recommend in St Lucia have responded to the demand by examining the sources of energy they employ, sustainability of growth and conscientious waste management practices, and by forging relationships with the communities that host them. Fox Grove Inn, where you will be based on this holiday, is locally owned and managed, drawing on the local communities for all their staffing needs and also their supplies. This has a very positive impact on the local economy.

St Lucia is renowned for its excellent cuisine using the freshest local ingredients and when a resort or restaurant grows their own produce or sources from local farmers and markets, you are guaranteed a great dining experience, this is certainly true of the restaurant at Fox Grove Inn. Fish and lobster when in season, are bought fresh from the fishermen in the local village, whilst local herbs, vegetables and fruits are selected at the market and from local farms. We also recommend that guests eat out in local restaurants, try the street food from vendors and take part in the local culture, thus spreading holiday spending throughout the local community.

Unlike most other UK based companies, we do not believe that is necessary for our birding groups to be accompanied by a UK leader. We have complete faith in our local guides who are familiar with their environment and feel responsible for protecting it, offering advice on how to preserve the delicate balance of nature. They are also best placed to know where to find the various species of birds.
