Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

We ensure our guides are mindful about protecting the environment in which you travel, and they do a fantastic job of promoting having a minimum impact to the environment whilst travelling. We ask you to be vigilant about disposing of your waste and recycle where possible. During your trip you will be asked if you have any waste to dispose of when it is a suitable time in the itinerary. This ensures we make it as easy as possible for our travellers to be eco-friendly whilst travelling.

We strongly advise all travellers to bring a reusable water bottle - this is an easy way to save plastic waste and is detailed in our ‘What to bring’ trip notes for all trips to all destinations. Your guide will remind you where and when you can fill up your re-usable water bottle. We also encourage general sustainability - limited use of aircon for instance. This is something we believe in strongly as an organisation, and it’s something we try to pass on to our travellers.

Though little time is spent within nature during this trip, great effort has still gone into ensuring it is as environmentally-friendly as it can be in any area possible. By walking or even travelling by bicycle during this trip, we reduce harmful emissions, and when travelling between farther destinations, shared vehicles are used in order to keep the environmental impact to a minimum.

Visiting natural sites such as the Jeita Grottoes or Baatara Gorge provides the organisations that run these sites with valuable support, allowing them to continue to maintain these sites. Ultimately, the economic support responsible tourism brings supports the preservation of some of Lebanon’s most important natural features.

The Impacts of this Trip

In Lebanon our ground handlers use local drivers and staff, who ensure that all supplies are purchased locally for all journeys. Our belief is that all operational costs should go directly into the local economy wherever possible. Improving employment opportunities in remote regions is a powerful tool in tourism and something that goes right to the heart of our responsible travel ethos.

Over the course of this trip there are some fantastic opportunities for our travellers to get out and support the communities themselves. Itinerary stops such as the historic souqs in Tripoli and Sidon not only allow our travellers to take in this aspect of Lebanon’s rich culture, but they offer the chance for them to purchase local handicrafts and goods directly from the makers and market-people themselves.

The many stops such as those at Ksara’s traditional winery, the many historical sites, or the number of museums visited on this tour also have a great impact on Lebanon’s communities and the country as a whole. For places such as these, responsible tourism provides a significant source of support, and ultimately, it plays a vital role in the continued preservation and exhibition of the country’s proud and rich heritage.

We feel it is important to support Lebanon's youth to secure a prosperous future for the individuals and the country as a whole. So for every traveller who books through Responsible Travel we give a token donation to The Nawaya Network which identifies promising youth from low-income backgrounds and connects them with mentors, classes, funding and internships, giving employment opportunities. This year, they have supported up to 2,500 youth in three main programs: an entrepreneurship and employ-ability program; a coding boot-camp for unemployed computer science graduates; and a talent development program for low-income youth. We are proud to support this cause, whose hard work promises a brighter future, not only for those it works with, but for the country as a whole.
