Madagascar wildlife small group tour

Carbon reduction

Your holiday will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this holiday and how to reduce them.

Environment

We ensure our guides are mindful about protecting the environment in which you travel, and they do a fantastic job of promoting having a minimum impact to the environment whilst travelling. Particularly when visiting delicate ecosystems such as those visited on this tour, we rely on our knowledgeable local guides to ensure our travellers’ presence has no negative impact, and we consider this a significant factor in our nature-based tours.

This tour supports a number of national parks and reserves across Madagascar. Their efforts to conserve not only the country’s many rare animal species, but vast areas of forest and natural landscape are something we admire and support greatly. The money that responsible tourism brings is essential in the continued running of these establishments, and ultimately, in the protection of Madagascar’s incredible natural spaces.

The logistics of this trip have also been crafted to be as eco-friendly as possible. The transport on this trip includes trips by car, boat and on foot where possible. Though there is one internal flight, it is necessary to make an otherwise impossible journey, and we strongly believe the benefits of our responsible tourism in these distant areas outweigh the negative environmental impact of the flight. Similarly, accommodation includes small hotels and a number of nights in a forest lodge in order to be more environmentally conscious. The environmental benefits of small accommodation over larger hotels are numerous, and it’s something we consider on all of our tours.

Finally, to you our traveller, we ask you to be vigilant about disposing of your waste and recycle where possible. During your trip you will be asked if you have any waste to dispose of when it is a suitable time in the itinerary. This ensures we make it as easy as possible for our travellers to be eco-friendly whilst travelling. We strongly advise all travellers to bring a reusable water bottle - this is an easy way to save plastic waste and is detailed in our ‘What to bring’ trip notes for all trips to all destinations.

Community

Though the majority of this tour is spent within nature and not within areas where communities are readily present, we have worked hard to ensure this tour has as much of a positive impact as possible on any communities we do touch upon. That’s why we use local guides and drivers offered fair pay and working conditions, use locally-sourced supplies, and use visit local accommodation, restaurants and businesses as a priority. Given the amount of time spent within natural areas, the use of tour guides on this trip is more than typical, and accommodations used include heritage properties and small, locally-owned hotels.

We also support a small portfolio of charities and local grassroots organisations. We support WaterAid which do vital and life-saving work in Madagascar. For every booking for this tour we make a token donation to this important cause. Almost half of Madagascans have no clean water, and around 90% still have nowhere clean, sustainable and suitable to go to the toilet. Without water, it's difficult for people to make hygiene a priority. Deadly diarrhoeal diseases are common and can easily be prevented.

WaterAid's work helps the country’s poorest people unlock their potential with clean water, toilets and hygiene. This is making a lasting difference and changing what has been normal for so long. We believe that the community should benefit from tourism, so we do our part with every tourist we send. WaterAid works together with the government, organisations and communities, to tackle challenges caused by a lack of access to clean, sustainable drinking water head on, and we are proud to support this charity.
