Description of Falkland Islands discovery holiday

Wildlife enthusiasts and photographers will be in their element with this enthralling small ship cruise around the ruggedly beautiful Falkland Islands, sailing from Buenos Aires and arriving 10 days later in Ushuaia, the world’s southernmost city.

The Falklands are home to an astonishing range of wildlife. all framed against dramatic landscapes. Expect to see immense colonies of fur and elephant seals, no fewer than five species of penguin including rockhopper, king, Magellanic and gentoo, and a staggering number of seabirds. A high quality camera isn’t just recommended on this trip – most travellers find it completely essential!

You’ll sail aboard a spacious expedition vessel that’s equipped with its own saltwater swimming pool, sauna, spa and gym, with yoga classes available too. Small ships such as this are without doubt the best way to explore the Antarctic. Not only do they make less of an impact on ports that have minimal infrastructure to cope with crowds, but they also ensure there’s little waiting around onboard each day. While one group is on land, a second can be taking to the water with rigid-hulled Zodiac boats or even kayaks.

Your ship will also have observation decks from where you can track dolphins in the waves, or albatrosses and other seabirds following in the wake. All cruises are accompanied by experts in their fields, who will be ready to give lectures or answer questions on Falkland geology, wildlife and history.

Throughout your cruise, local food and local guides will be used wherever possible. Not only is this extremely beneficial to the environment and communities in the region, but it also gives you a deeper connection to the culture. Small ship cruises in the Falkland Islands allow you to get to places that larger vessels cannot, and don’t skimp on the luxuries either, but they also go big when it comes to giving back.

Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

The Falkland Islands are well known for their dramatic landscapes and diverse wildlife, and we want to ensure that the beautiful flora and fauna here is being protected and preserved. We do this by promoting the islands conservation efforts and ensuring that our passengers are fully briefed about how to interact safely with wildlife prior to departure. Our pre-departure literature includes regulations and guidelines to ensure that the scenery of the Falkland Islands is in no way tampered with. It also includes more information on how to reduce your carbon footprint while being on the tour.

We use highly regulated, licensed vessels which are well equipped to operate in these remote ecosystems. We are fully compliant with all rules set out by IAATO. We carefully choose the ships we want to charter, and its small size has a far lesser impact on shore landings. Smaller ships, such as ours can navigate narrow water ways, and by carrying fewer passengers generates far less waste. We also carry any waste back to our home port, unlike some of the larger ships which do not allow for this.

Our highly trained expedition team will make sure that all guidelines and regulations are met during landings to protect the local flora and fauna. Keeping a safe distance whilst visiting penguin colonies and when nesting birds are around is of paramount importance.

The Impacts of this Trip

Tourism in the Falkland Islands plays an important part in supporting the local economy. Using local guides, visiting their shops and restaurants ensures that every penny spent on the islands stays within the local economy. Additionally, we will visit historic sites and battlefields during our expedition which helps broaden understanding of the rich history of the Falkland’s and the political environments that its residents live in nowadays.

We work with a variety of charities to diversify where our funds go. For instance, we support the Mawson’s Huts Foundation, which was established in 1997 to conserve the Mawson’s Huts at Cape Denison in East Antarctica. Since then, it has funded over ten major expeditions to the historic site with further expedition planes.

We also work closely with Project Peru, a UK-based charity, who run an orphanage in Zapallal in the shanty towns on the outskirts of Lima. We also support ANIA, a high-profile Peruvian NGO which works with children to help teach them about their environment and how to manage it in a sustainable manner.

By booking your tour with us, you will be making a real impact on these communities as a percentage of the funds generated from this tour will go back to these projects.
