Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your holiday will help support conservation and local people.

Over the course of this tour, we rely on our knowledgeable, local guides and expert boatmen when venturing through a number of natural areas to reach destinations – the Ura Kidane Mihret and Azwa Maryam churches which are surrounded by jungle, for example. Our guides are mindful about protecting the environment in which you travel, and they do a fantastic job of promoting having a minimum impact on the environment whether in natural or urban areas.

The trip also supports the Simien Mountains, a natural world heritage site, and Awash National Park. Both of these areas offer protection to many types of rare flora and fauna, as well as the preservation of the vast areas of nature and woodland themselves. The economic support that visitors provide these areas with is vital in their running and upkeep, as well as the continuation of the important conservation work they do.

Finally, to you our traveller: we strongly advise all travellers to bring a reusable water bottle - this is an easy way to save plastic waste and is detailed in our ‘What to Bring’ trip notes for all trips to all destinations. Your guide will remind you where and when you can fill up your re-usable water bottle.
During your trip you will be asked if you have any waste to dispose of when it is a suitable time in the itinerary. This ensures we make it as easy as possible for our travellers to be eco-friendly whilst traveling. We also encourage general sustainability over the course of your trip – using air-conditioning and electricity sparingly when possible, for example. This is something we believe in strongly as a company, and something we try to pass on to our travellers.

The Impacts of this Trip

As regular travellers, one thing that never ceases to amaze and inspire us is the kindness and generosity of local people, often people who have very little to their name. We firmly believe that they are who make these places special and that they should benefit from our visit. Therefore, as first preference, we use local guides and drivers offered fair pay and working conditions, use locally-sourced supplies, and visit locally-owned accommodations, shops and eateries.

This tour features visits to museums, monasteries, castles and many historical sites. These sites rely on the income that visitors provide, and ultimately, supporting these sites is supporting the continued preservation and exhibition of Ethiopia’s rich history and culture.

This itinerary also includes stops in tribal villages, including visits to their local markets. In very small communities such as these, a small amount of economic support can be hugely significant, and when done responsibly, tourism here can increase quality of life greatly. Through the use of knowledgeable local guides, we ensure that the tribespeople met on this itinerary are not negatively impacted in any way. These stops provide an opportunity for our travellers to take in rich cultures and learn about beliefs and traditions. We work hard to ensure our travellers have only a positive effect on the people they come into contact with, and local guides prevent the risk of any negative impact that may occur as a result of cultural differences.

Finally, we are proud to support the communities in Ethiopia by contributing to WaterAid. As far as having access to clean water is concerned, Ethiopia has made significant positive steps over the last two decades thanks to WaterAid, but there is still a long way to go. Today, almost four in ten of the country’s 99 million people don’t have clean water – that’s almost 60-million people. In order to continue their vital work which has, quite literally, a life-saving impact, WaterAid relies on the donations of supporting patrons. With that in mind, for every booking we receive for this trip we are proud to make a token contribution to this notable cause.
